Some of China's biggest video streaming sites have been warned that they face punishment after failing to remove explicit Japanese cartoon video clips.

China's Ministry of Culture said the firms had hosted anime that glorified violence and terrorism, and contained "vulgar" erotic elements.

Three specific examples were mentioned: High school of the Dead, Blood-C and Zankyou no Terror.

High school of the Dead: accusations of being borderline pornographic

Zankyou no Terror: glorified terrorism, violence and criminal activities

Blood-C: bloody with a beheading scene that would cause "extreme discomfort"

In my opinion, the Chinese government is getting worked up over a storm in a teacup, particularly when far more graphic material has been made by the Chinese film industry EG The City of Life and Death. I’d have thought an age restriction system similar to what YouTube has in place would be sufficient.

What are your thoughts?

for the sake of balance (while they are from YouTube have some common sense)

The arguments the Ministry of Culture is making against anime are uninteresting, unoriginal, and ultimately indefensible. It's the usual tripe: "This anime is bad because it will surely promote violence!", "This anime is bad because boobies are evil!", "This anime is bad because if violence makes some queasy it should be generally unavailable!", and so on. I especially loved Leslie Young's "Won't someone PLEASE think of the CHILDREN?" nonsense.

The firms accused of violating China's ridiculously wide obscenity standards are listed in this article:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-04-01/china-punishes-video-sites-for-hosting-offensive-anime/.86613

You've got to love the part where the Ministry is talking punishment before these firms' guilt has even been determined. You've also got to love the part where firms have to ask permission to even broadcast/stream foreign content, and that the government holds line-item veto power over broadcasting/streaming lists. "Oh, China" indeed.

People who are mental will still do what they do no matter if they've watched, read or played something with graphic content and/or something regarding terrorism/sexual acts.

If i had to guess, id say China is still holding a grudge over ww2, and theres still the issue of the Senkaku Islands, so censoring Japanese anime is more like a little middle finger to Japan. Who knows...

Does that mean that China is going to ban all the Kung Fu movies they make with "various" bloody things happening to people?

Such non-sense, Anime = culture and a cultural highlight at least. Chinese government clearly have no taste. Let them do something about their pollution issues and leave anime alone. People can decide for themselves what to censor and what not.

I have a huge wallscroll in my room with HOTD grillz tits and ass exposed and wet, and they look like they are being groped/assaulted by a zombie. It's the one that's on sale in the crunchyroll store right now actually! I love it!
