i think if its between friends and u both understand that u dont mean it its ok ... i joke with my friends (brown, asian so on) and they joke about me (im white) ... now if its between non friends then its harder to tell if its jokes so its not approapite in that setting

You can't be really sure, though. Some people keep quiet or let out at other places. You can't really be sure they're not offended.Maybe they hide it well. You can't expect ANYONE who's offended about anything will speak up about it(especially if they're Malay, many who because of tradition and the behaviour taught to them cause them to rarely speak up and rather keep quiet). In the end,it's better to be safe than sorry.

True that - I'm actually one of those people who wouldn't say anything ^-^; But I do agree taking it easy/starting slow is key. Before even saying anything you should figure out if you can even go into that area with people - like how you know what to say and not to say in front of your parents, teachers, strangers. If you can't tell, don't be so blatant about it - starting slow and safe and watching responses (verbal or nonverbal, mannerisms and nuances can say alot) is really the best way to go, especially if you're in their domain.

It is a bit different if you're around people you know and then there's the one or 2 people who are new to the group. I still say go easy with em, but since they're in your ballpark, some people would disagree - "show them how it is" if you will ^^;

As for people saying "Not trying to sound racist","I'm not racist but",well,I had to agree many people did what you said but it's not true for everyone, though. Some REALLY mean it.

Yup, yup... it's a double edged sword, really.I do try to think of good in everyone -- but still take each comment with a grain of salt ^.^0

Um, I guess. I mean its ok if you go, 'look at me! I look like a friggin snow man since how white i am!" Or "ahaha! I look like someone made a sculpture with charcoal and it turned out to be me!!!" But it's wrong to go around saying, "that person is too white", "stupid nigga!" "look at that small eye asian!!!!!" Naw man! thats wrong! But your not doing that...are you???

Among my circle of friends we sometimes make statements about each others race. Whether it be Mexican, Asian, white, even gay or lesbian. We never take it seriously though. By that time we've already known each other long enough to know what is "kosher" and what isn't ok. If I'm meeting an entirely new person then I wouldn't normally give any derrogatory statements, even if they're lighthearted because I just don't know what might offend the individual. Some people do take things too seriously, but it's easier to safegaurd yourself in public and relax when you're around a good group of friends. Just like a job, you have to aware of your surroundings and others that might not want to hear your conversations.

I think it's okay to make fun of a race if it's your own race. As for poking fun at other races? It really depends if you truly mean it or not, and who you're talking to while making fun of others.

The funny thing is that there is no such thing as race. Ever heard of the Mitochondrial Eve? The common mother of all human beings? The mother we all descend from and genetically relate to? There is one race: The human race. Skin color has nothing to do with it. I will explain why.

We all started out as "African-American" (Black) because the first modern humans originated in Africa. To make a long story short, the Mitochondrial Eve's descendents had the best genetic material for survival (From her. Hers was the strongest to breed) and when food grew short, the migrated out first into lower Asia and then to Australia and then to North America and South America (Europe was not migrated into until after the last Ice Age).

Now here's where skin color comes in: Melatin. Melatin is our natural defense against the UV rays from the sun and colors us accordingly to the environment (I.E. Harsh environment like the Sahara = More melatin and darker the color. The less melatin you have, the lighter complexion you have). Melatin levels changed as humans no longer needed such protection as they migrated. It became lesser as the migrated to less harsh climates like Australia and India.

In a nutshell, there is no such thing as "race". It's just Melatin levels. We're all human so it doesn't matter. The only difference between a black man and myself is that he's less likely to get sunburned than I am. That's it. No one is superior. Some people are just more or less apt to survive a harsh sun.

Poke fun at "race" all you like but you're just stupid then.

ORLY? Then explain why different races are more prone to disorders such as black people getting Sickle Cell Anemia. Melatin is the reason for variances in skin color but after it happened we changed in other ways and races have other differences.

"Race" is just a social construct and is therefore artificial. It is more "correct" to use the term ethnicity. And, in many cases, we have more in common genetically with people from other "races" than we do with our own family members. As for skin color, eyes, etc, it is all due to environmental adaptation, like skygod says. "Asian" eyes, for example, are "slanted" due to the high wind velocity in Asia. These adaptations were then passed down through our parents.

As for the disorders, I'm not too sure, but I think it probably has something to do with cell/DNA mutations. Sickle Cell Anemia is a hereditary disease, so it's likely that its due to children being born from the same "racial" gene pool. But that is just speculation on my part, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

yeah i agree, my boyfriend's indonesian born chinese and he doesn't have chinese eyes....and i'm spanish, filipino, german and irish and people say i look more asian because i'm dark and sister looks latina cause she's lighter. my cousin is the same he is spanish, filipino and swedish and he's brown like me but his younger brother and sister both look spanish with fair skin, ash blond hair and green eyes. I come from a poly- ethnic family and we all come in different colours and this means that we all have racist jokes about each other. i don't think racist jokes are racist at all. they're more about people's behavioral patterns and appearances. it's a lot better than calling someone fat or a bean pole.

If you know the person and they know you mean it...then yea, take a joke sometime ya know?

But to a stranger, racial abuse is much more serious.
