Harems are a dime a dozen for a reason, there’s only so many times a show can have some hapless guy trip into a bathroom or dressing room where a girl is half naked and decides to punch him out for his “pervyness.” “Testament of Sister New Devil” starts out by following that cliché tradition, then cleverly breaking it. Basara, our hero (literally and figuratively) discovers that in a matter of days; his father is leaving on a trip for a while but NOT before he announces he’s marrying a woman Basara has never met AND has 2 girls (Mio and Maria) of her own who are now going to be Basara’s step sisters. Basara learns quickly (and painfully) his new sisters are in fact demons who hypnotized his father in order to secure their safety living under cover at Basara’s home to avoid being killed by demons and heroes seeking their powers.

Trouble is, Basara is one of the descended hero clan members foretold to kill the demons; Maria is a succubus and Mio is actually the daughter of the almighty demon lord…plus Basara accidentally made a contract with her making him her master! Everything starts out bare bones (or bared breasts in this show’s case) in the beginning: same harem antics and sense of humor playing out as if it were any other show. What’s interesting is the “twist” with the hero clan, revealed demon sisters and the “defending your own worst enemy” as your new sister comes like literally half way into the episode. This series could have easily kept this kind of reveal for many episodes down the line or at least wait til the very end but no; they decided to bring this wacko game changer right in the very middle of the episode and I REALLY liked that.

Sure, weird stuff like this isn’t uncommon in anime but it provides a nice “heads up” as to what kind of stuff you’re going to be getting into right off the bat. The animation isn’t great 24/7, there are some areas that doesn't look quite right. Although I must say, the use of battles, magic and other general anime weirdness looks amazingly well and brings out the best available aspects of the animation style. Both Mio and Maria are the true scene stealers; they provide lots of fun, amusement, sexuality and some fun role reversal; having a demon lord’s daughter actually be the “nice” girl in a harem.

To be frank, this is a harem anime through and through. The girls are surprisingly attractive, plus the hero is well.....actually cool! If you love action and plenty of fan service (tons of boobs) then this is the right anime for you! Check out the simulcast airing now on Crunchyroll!

I didn't know what I was getting into with this one. The ecchi-ness turn(ed)s me off (especially with the succubus in the form of a prepubescent girl) but the action and plot actually kept me interested just enough to check it out for a few episodes. That, in turn, led me to deciding to go ahead and stick with it for the whole season, which I don't regret or feel glad to have done. I'll give it credit for holding my attention that long but honestly, it's "just okay", imo and I won't be tuning into future seasons.

It would be good, but it's censored, so I rather watch it elsewhere, even though I'm a paying premium member. I'm 34 years old. I don't need any fucking censorship.

We here at CR don't actively censor our content. Broadcast anime is usually censored to give an incentive to purchase the (uncensored) Blu-rays or DVDs.

Then will you please tell those that give you censored anime that I, like very many in my situation, don't even own a Bluray or DVD player and would never ever buy their stupid physical media no matter what. I stopped buying physical media for music 10 years ago, and stopped buying physical media for games, series and movies like 6-7 years ago. The only thing they accomplish by giving you censored shows is pissing off YOUR customers. Why are CrunchyRoll bending over and accepting that they are fucking with your customers?

Dunno why so many people are complaining about Testament of white censorship devil, but past that it's a good show, shouldn't let the fact you can't get off to it turn you away.

Because that is literally what we get from our content providers, and it's what's airing on Japanese TV (and thus, what we air). This is just the state of the industry right now--over in Japan, where anime makes money hand over fist, this a model that ensures a series like Testament of Sister New Devil will turn a profit for its physical media release (because physical media is treated like a premium product over there).

Alright then. You managed to calm me down and accept that it's not CrunchyRolls fault, but the reality of this salebehaviour is still very annoying and displeasing. The only good thing I see about it is that I'm not alone in being annoyed, and that I think that in time, physical media will stop being sold in it's current form, which means that I will probably get the digital reality I actually want in the future. Not in the near future, but I will win in the end.

In the meantime, I will probably pirate the unscensored Bluray and hope that I will speed up the development towards an all out non-physical salesmodel.

Oh, and about the serie. I watched the 2 first episodes and I think it's great so far!

I might do that, but unlucky for me, I really have a hard time ignoring the censorshit, which is distracting me from enjoying the show in it's censored state.
