So today when in the vegetarian discussion, I briefly mentioned oxalic acid and its presence in foods, as well as it being dangerous to consume in large quantities over time.

Then BAM. this is trending on Facebook.

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc1414481

What did the doctors find? Oxalates. (granted, these were from drinking a gallon of tea a day).

What other foods are oxalates found in?
"Although many foods contain oxalate, only nine foods are known to increase oxalate in the urine and kidney stone formation. They are: beets, spinach, rhubarb, strawberries, nuts, chocolate, tea, wheat bran, and all dry beans (fresh, canned, or cooked), excluding lima and green beans"

http://my.clevelandclinic.org/services/urology-kidney/treatments-procedures/kidney-stones-oxalate-controlled-diet

Granted, they only are concerned if you are eating these foods in huge doses, so no need to fear the kale and beans, but I found it darkly humorous.

I think he is still alive though...just on dialysis and possibly for life. I could be wrong though. I just can't find anything that actually says he died.

Scary. I drink probably 7 cups of tea a day on average.

Makes me want to cut down.

It's how much my dad drinks. His eyes got wide when I told him about how the guy isn't in good shape from it. He won't cut down though. Oh well, he's 60+ so his time is limited anyway.

I like potent sativa, too.

I use it in terms of it's latin roots, as in cultivated not for it's use in Cannabis sativa.

Unfortunately moderation is a foreign concept to a lot of people out there.

Also, interesting fact: My brother is in renal failure right now and one of the things his prescribed diet allows him to drink is Iced Tea.

Latin roots?

My bad the etymological or older usage of the word.
