I just recently started reading some fan fiction, and I'm actually a little hooked. I think it's interesting to see all the wonderful ideas out there, and to sometimes see a character act a little out of character, or to see relationships develop between characters that aren't canon.
I also think it's really great to see how many people are asking to get constructive criticism on their writing in order to improve. Writing and editing are both things I highly enjoy. I've actually received a number of PMs back thanking me for my reviews, and asking me to edit their grammar and spelling on their upcoming stories, which I gladly agreed to (greedy to read some more, muahah ).

Anyway - thoughts, opinions? :)

*edit I should probably mention that as of right now, I've only read Fairy Tail fanfics though I do intend on branching out soon, I just wanted to stay within the same area for now while I get a feel of the community. I don't doubt that I'll like other fan fictions though! :)

There are some really great fanfiction stories out there but unfortunately there are far more badly written ones. Some of the issues with bad fanfiction are:

The author is a novice and can't spell or follow basic rules of grammar. The better fanfiction authors check their stories before posting or ask someone to proof read them. The inexperienced/impatient authors don't even bother with a spell checker.

The author has given the characters a complete personality transplant without explanation. Having a character act a little bit out of the ordinary in an entirely new situation is fine, as is developing the character over the length of a story so that a change to their personality by the end of a story is justified. Too many fanfiction authors ignore all of the character traits shown in the manga/anime and give the characters new personalities from line 1 - in these cases they have effectively written about a new set of characters but used the names from the anime to squeeze the story into the fanfiction genre.

Ozallos, a fanfiction author, has posted a set of "Rules of Fanfiction Failure" on his fanfiction.net profile (https://www.fanfiction.net/u/891127/Ozzallos). They cover a lot of the issues that can make a fanfiction fail.

In terms of the best fanfiction I have read, I would recommend the following:

Destiny's Child (Ranma 1/2, Sailor Moon & Slayers crossover)
The Wild Horse Thesis (Ranma 1/2 & Neon Genesis Evangelion crossover)
Lines of Destiny & its sequel, "Destiny's intersection" (a classic Ranma 1/2 & Sailor Moon crossover series)

These three are all quite old as it is rare for me to take the time to sift through all the chaff to find the kernels of gold.

I love Fanfiction :)) It depends on who wrote them, of course. I've read on fanfiction .net and wattpad .com since I was 15 and loved it. I have a few that I can mention for anyone can enjoy. :)) some anime and other books.
All on fanfiction .net:
Starfall by Lomonaaeren (harry potter fanfic)
Sai's diary by gisella89 (short but good and funny) (naruto fanfic)
The undying by A. M. Brossart (I know this is twilight fanfic, but trust me it's really good and I wish this author wrote the book instead)
The Mistakes That He Made by SimplyUnmistakable (naruto, its about obito and him going back in time)
Feathers In the Night by SchadenFreude95 (Young Justice comic)
and last but not least and my favorite is:
Dragonball Legends by Veema ( DBZ, I've read this for over 2 years and I'm waiting for 71, it's soooo good, the author is an actual author and I really want to buy her books since she's amazing) (DL is about bardock going back in time to change events)

I'm a nerd when it comes to fanfic. I just want a really good story that's good on the plot, characters and cliffhangers (when and if they do update lol XD)

I can't visualize when I read. I rather write fan-fiction than read it anyways.

I recall we discussed this in another forum recently. I can see why that would make you prefer writing it over reading it!

Yeah for the most part I do, I follow a few writers who have really well throughout and well written plots.

I have seen A LOT of really bad fan fics though, to the point that I wonder if they are even really trying or if it's just a troll trying to give it a bad name.

That's what I've gotten in the habit of doing. When I find someone well written, I tend to check out their fave authors too. Birds of a feather flock together!

Wow, this is so accurate, I can only agree (and laugh... a lot). Some are so awful I almost want to cry. Sifting through the chaos of fanfiction has proved to occasionally be quite the tiresome task.

Depends.

It depends if they are written at least decently, if the story is decent, and if the characters are at least close to character. Nothing irritates me more in a fanfic than terrible writing, a story that is boring, and the characters not even close to how they should be.

But if all these elements are decent, meaning the writing isn't all scrounged together with hardly any punctuation or are just sloppy sentences, the story doesn't take forever to go though a simple scene, and the characters have only a few out of characters moments, or at least they reflect the character they are meant to be.

I mean, you can't have a character who is usually easy going about thing and have them get upset over stupid things, or someone who hates company to suddenly be the life of the party....
