Curious to know when most people started watching or discovered anime.

How did you discover it and what was the first Anime you watched that got you hooked?

I started watching at was 15.

First watched it... probably either 6 or 7.

The first time I reallly got into it however was when I was 9 and FLCL used to come on at 4:30am on adult swim :3. I can still remember my sleep deprived nights on school days.

The first anime I encountered was Science Ninja Team Gatchaman when I was 3 or 4. It was an English language adaptation but not Battle of the Planets as I bought a re-release a few years ago to relive the nostalgia, only to find a strange, tin-can robot had been inserted into certain scenes. Strangely, the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science_Ninja_Team_Gatchaman) doesn't mention any other English adaptations of the original series, so it is possible that I was watching an entirely different series (although I clearly remember the bird motif and the male and female lead costumes are identical to my memories).

Other series I saw after that were Ulysses 31 in 1985, The Mysterious Cities of Gold in 1986 and Belle and Sebastian in 1989. Of course up to this point I was only 8, so I only classed them as cartoons with a very interesting but related style.

It wasn't until the mid-90s that I heard about anime and realised that all those shows I liked to watch had been developed in Japan. After that I kept a close eye on the TV-guides to spot any shows being aired. I think I watched the Heroic Legend of Arslan OVA in about 1996 at about 2:00 am while my little brother was sleeping in the same room, followed by 3x3 Eyes in the same slot a few weeks later.

My first Japanese language anime were Akira, Patlabor (movie) and Roujin Z as part of a Japanese season on BBC in the late 90s.

Since I started earning money in 2000 I have been hooked on anime, first buying VHS tapes and then DVDs when they became available.

The breadth of anime series now available in the UK through either DVD or online is amazing compared to the 90s but there are still many series unlicensed that I want to see.

17. I was basically the only member of my group of high school friends that wasn't into anime/manga, and it took my sister finding it to pull me in.

It's when I was 17 that I was interesting enough in anime to start to actively look for more that I could watch.

mmm maybe around 12

i think it was on TV after school but only lasted for a year and our TV set died and back then they were not cheap

It was a mecha anime and I just saw episode 1 on youtube and the dubbing sure made me laugh now but it sounded really good for an anime in the 70's ...

geez ....it gives me goose bumps while listening to that intro song...damm that is one thing from my childhood that I remember strongly . I had a tape recorder that I used to record the song as I watched it on the TV set and transcribe the lyrics later . Athough I had no clue what I was singing lol .

yeap... im old

I remember watching GoLion when I was 6 or 7... there were probably a few others on afternoon cartoon hour back then but they were less memorable. I watched the original Toonami, and Sailor Moon was big, when I was a teenager that's when I got into it as a 'fan'. I watched Toonami with my friends every day at college, and after college Adult Swim was on... oh the memories

Seriously, 17 years old? No one watched Toonami? I've been a watcher since I was 4.
