yea... if anime is good its good, i don't really care... but I will say that if an art style is too old that will deter me from getting into it right away. So more updated art/animation is always a plus.

If a story is good then it will reach you no matter what time its told in. The same goes for if its bad.

Some were Manga but none of them were Light novels since light novels started out on the 90's but didn't boom before the 00's

More and more newer anime were originally manga or light novels. We don't have many actual anime series that weren't originally manga or light novels or anything else.

Just how I feel.

Well to be fair, most anime before the 00's were also originally manga. Just look at ghost in the shell and Akira. they were both manga's that launched in the 80's with anime movie adaptations released in the 90's. And look at both Akira and ghost in the shell, they're both some of the most successful anime franchises to ever be created.

However there were a lot more anime originals back in the day

Just remember that when people mention the good older anime they are probably remembering the best shows of that time. You might say that some of the plots of the old Sailor Moon were bleah, but hey, I think the sailor soldiers have probably been the most cosplayed over the years. Someone must like it. Trigun was epic. It has even spawned a movie a couple of years ago. AI Yori Aoshi was another epic one. How about Kite? It has recently spawned a live action movie.

I am sure that some of the recent offering will also (in time) be considered epic. I personally nominate The Irregular at Magic High School and Attack on Titan. Others are, I think, doomed to be forgotten, such as Cuticle Detective Inaba or Diabolik Lovers.

The bottom like is that there are good both new and old anime. What also probably true is that there are few truly "new" plot lines, since most have been used at one time or another.

While harems and the lack of an adult protaginist bothers me I still think new animes are mostly pretty good

Take it from someone who has seen at least 300 different series from the late 70's straight through to the current day.. there was shit anime before the 90's and shit anime after the 90's; Just like there were some amazing shows then and amazing shows now.

Still alot of great shows coming out.. just alot of them are hidden behind the stereotypical highschool harem series that tend to multiply even more every season.

Old animes budgets where enormous compared to todays on.
By the way is this a PvP thread?

There weren't though. For TV anime the budgets have been floating around the 10 million yen per episode range for a couple of decades now.

In fact thats why there is a bit of a dispute in the industry. Cost of living has been going up but wages haven't been.

And the equipment improvement... since those days and still. yet we now know about anime in general because1- internet and 2- fan subs.... fan subs that dark age was impossible

1. This isn't a bitter war between factions like sub vs. dub is.

2.We old guard fans aren't giving up on anime yet, we still watch the new stuff as well.

3. the EXACT SAME ARGUMENT permeates through the videogame medium exist as well.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/483642/newer-video-games-suck/
And here's a video where someone is playing an old FPS in particular and pulls apart new ones:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q6UQ2QlRH0

4. the old stuff was more free because it didn't have the same business model. Yes, a lot did suck, but, a lot more risks were taken. It's the same with any medium. when music was something capitalized on, it sucked. Grunge was awesome, until it became the new "pop" music" in the 90's, Same with hip hop and rap.

5. the quantity available now is far greater, so a lot of the crap before didn't get through the filter before (and we were more grateful for what we did get)

But yes, there's usually a FEW titles that will bring you back when you've given up on anime these days, but then again, they're fewer in between and there's a lot more shit to wade through anymore

I have to admit that most of my anime exposure is the stuff I've seen growing up in the 80's when everything was just crammed in to the heading of Japanimation and I dropped out of the genre once Dragonball Z and Naruto came on the scene. I'm not much in to DBZ, Naruto or the too cutesy stuff myself, but to throw the baby out with the bathwater never made much sense. There's a few more recent anime series I'm enjoying. And while I prefer the older stuff because of the familiar feeling I don't see the point in just eschewing the newer. Maybe I'm just an uncommon fan?

I find it a bit more difficult to get into an older anime, aesthetic is part of the reason why I like anime so much and some older anime isn't that aesthetically pleasing. I know there are really good older anime but I just can't get into them if they look like crap.

Aesthetics in anime shouldn't be about the looks, it should be about the message. Which older anime are better with!

I think the way an anime looks is very important, you can find good stories anywhere like movies, tv shows, cartoons, etc... but the unique look of anime is a big part of what makes it anime, so looks shouldn't be disregarded.

I'm not as entertained by most movie, tv show, cartoon stories =o.. I like stuff that looks nice but it's not gonna keep my attention if the story is meeeehhh~
