I personally have felt like new anime is suffering in quality these days. Don't get me wrong; there are a few I find decent. Sometimes I just feel like an old bitty, yelling at the kids to get off her lawn. Still, I just don't feel like anime is the same as it used to be. I feel like it's become overly cliche and often times just plain half-assed. Perhaps because I've seen so much of it and am growing tired of it, or perhaps anime these days might just be pumped out to please and be forgotten soon after.

This I wonder about often, and don't really know one way or the other.

What do you think? Do you think anime has gotten worse in some ways over the years? Has it gotten better? Has it stayed the same?

It's like the tide.... it comes and goes.

I'll give OP a bone. You're absolutely right OP!

Interesting that you say the anime industry is overly cliche. I feel the same way about these threads.

It has.

I'll just reiterate my opinion from the other thread: Many new anime are crap. Many old anime were crap, but we don't remember them (because who would want to?). Old anime we love also has a veneer of nostalgia.

Well the stuff I'm watching now isn't the stuff that got me addicted to anime... but... I'm still addicted.

I share some of your thoughts. It might just be that i'm getting a little of tired of watching the same types of animes. Maybe i should try to expand my view and give different types a shot.

Actually, anime would be a whole lot more interesting in general if they stopped massproducing ecchi loli stuff. Thankfully this season looks good though.

I have a hard time finding new stuff to get into. And it's not just due to nostalgia and being stuck in the past. I liked some newer ones like Gosick, Another, Sankarea, etc. Perhaps my tastes are changing, too.

I haven't found much to like for the past several seasons. I'm sure something great will come out soon if it hasn't already.

Personally I think the old stuff are more cliche and dumb.

well, the old stuff is cliche now, but it wasnt when it was made. and a lot of old stuff is really really bad.
i dont think it has changed all that much, we just have more anime (and less origonality as a result).
tho the art quailty and the CG effects have made even bad anime pretty pretty.

I think the industry is getting very lazy every show they come out with just uses nudity to sell itself and everyone just excepts it as plot and jokes about it ... it isn't funny to me nor does it serve as "plot" for me... if i wanted to watch porn i would watch porn i'm tired of feeling like if i watch anime all i am really doing is watching soft porn.

I wish Japan would come out with an actual rating system that is similar to the United States... when something is rated R or Mature it tells you why before you even start watching it you know if you want to keep it on that channel... If anime did this every single person would think they were about to watch some late night show on showtime.

And, I really am scared that it will soon come up in court being compared to porn or child porn and they will put several restrictions on anime being shown in the United States, which will hurt the industry and/or destroy it here.

I don't really care all that much, but maybe if you are getting really sick of anime, maybe it's time for a break. You'll be into it again, and you might actually learn to appreciate the newer animes.

There are some anime today I find just as profound and sincere as some from the 80s/90s. Today anime have become more refined and a lot more glamorized. The overall standards are higher which makes it even harder to stand out in my opinion.
