I'm not really a fan of Mecha Anime, I can't just get into Mechs fighting each other for whatever reason.

i would assume it matters, do you like Yaoi hentai? Yuri Hentai? just Yaoi? just Yuri? just hentai? just Slice of life? just action?
that's the reason why there are genres for personnel preference. I'll pretty much watch anything as long as it isn't yaoi or yuri,of course there is always an exception but ya.

Only when searching for that specific style, otherwise no it doesn't matter.

I'm a fan of comedy and romance, thats not to say I dislike everything else, they are just generally my favorites.

Also, it's not really a genre, but I've been on a bit of a shoujo kick recently. It's interesting to see the different ways the same situation is portrayed with a different intended audience.

Only if you don't like every genre, which most people don't.

Genre doesn't matter to me. Artwork/animation style does matter to me.

Edit: I lie. The one genre I don't care for is Yuri. I've tried watching yuri. Sure it's hawt/cute, whatever. Without a male character I can't get into it. idk why.

Genre is irrelevant, to me. There are not enough new anime per season to base what I watch on genre. I'd rather try a lot of shows and decide what to keep, or drop, based on how much fun I had watching. Picking by genre would mean potentially skipping good anime in favor of lesser titles simply because they were genre fits. The only genre I usually don't watch are bishounen anime, like Utapri or Boueibu. Though rare, even then there are exceptions. I still watched Free and Kamisama Hajimemashita.

I don't care about the genre, as long as it's interesting. That being said, I don't find yuri, yaoi, or "cute girls doing cute things" interesting.

In my opinion, genre matters more when you are just starting out in anime. You want to watch something you KNOW you will like. Or expect you will. After you have dabbled in anime for a couple years, you start to run out of shows in the genre you know you will enjoy. Then you venture out to other genres that you heard was good.
I say this because when I first started watching anime, I only watched psychological thriller and slice of life. I could not even stomach a harem.
Now, I watch pretty much anything that seems interesting to me. Whether it is a yaoi, ecchi, shoujo, shounen, horror, harem. As long as I think it will be good I watch it.
Still waiting for the day I can watch Yuri. I doubt I ever will. Either way, I respect and support all genres.

Yes and no.

Yes, in that genre sets your expectations for a show. You have a reasonable idea about what you are getting: the story and character types, tropes, etc. It's often the genre that sells the show; "I love mecha, so I'm going to love Ultra-Mecha-Battle-Girls!"

No, in that genre is not a substitute for good storytelling. A good story will often pull in fans that normally wouldn't like that genre. Plus, nowadays, there's a lot of shows that blend several genres together.
