Over the last few years I've seen more and more people in the anime community state things like "The Ending is Paramount". And I personally think that a good ending holds a great role in showing how good a show was overall... However I don't think the ending is paramount considering the fact that a lot of all anime produced is used to advertise the original source material (i.e Manga, light novel, game, visual novel and etc.). And then there's also a lot of anime out there that doesn't meet the expected sales target and that are just left hanging after a plot twist. And yes, that's always a bad thing. However that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the other parts of the anime, for example if a anime have 100 episodes and it got a piss poor ending in episode 100. Then that means that only 1% of the anime was bad. I personally think it's about the journey while watching and that the ending is important, however it's not a deal breaker that some anime fans claims it to be.

So what do you think about "The Ending is Paramount" that some people tend to throw out?

Well.. a shit ending is like someone making a beautiful cake.. but then finishing it by topping it off with little bits of deer poop.

Everything else can be wonderful about that cake...but those finishing touches can spoil everything good about it.

If I suddenly had a time machine, and was able to go back in time, I would go back to 1980, and tell every person entering the movie theaters for The Empire Strikes Back what the twist at the end is.

Just because I now have a time machine I have this power.

I thinking the ending of any story, anime, game, novel ect. is very important. The ending may not be everything but a poorly executed ending has the power to ruin an otherwise grand story.

Quite famous was the Mass Effect debacle. In the end all that fan hate was because of misunderstandings over a game that needed another six months in the oven and had been brought out under cooked.

An ending that wasn't 'bad' but provoked a lot of comment and confusion was the original ending of the Evangelion TV series. This didn't trigger fan hate but there were a lot of questions.

Endings are not the only important part. A story with a trite, clumsy, off-putting beginning might never get watched to completion. Ditto enough of the 'middle' is bad. However...

How it all ends is an important part of the journey the part that many are most curious about. If the ending doesn't fit the expectations generated by the rest of the show it can spoil the whole show.

A bad ,incomplete, or ending with too many questions and no sequel to resolve them can leave a bad taste in your mouth. I think of Eragon and enough said. So much potential wasted, Anything with Jeremy irons and john malkovich being ruined ticks me off

that just means that you personally don't understand the endings, because you could be a saint that finds no fault with any thing but say there was bad ending. Think of it like this MC goes through hell to save the love of his life, they start living happily together than the last page is her getting hit by a random truck blood everywhere MC is crying and screaming and that's the end. No clarification, no reason that there was a semi truck on a one way street and it's going the wrong way and she's just.... dead now tell me is that a good ending or a bad one?

I think of a good anime ending as a luxury, but not a necessity and not a deal breaker. I'm one of those hippies who values the journey more than the destination.

It doesn't bother me if a show has an ambiguous ending or if the animation shop tries to ham-fist an original ending of their own which appears to be written by a 4-year old on cheap psychopharmacological meds. If I enjoyed the show, I could give a rat how they do or don't tie it up at the end.

So no, the ending isn't paramount to my rating of the show in totality.

The movie. The books were great, the film was a train wreck that diverged too far from the books.

That was a good ending, although I enjoyed there relationship, I only watched the show because of the turmoil the MC went through to save the love of his life, and although the random truck was a strange co-incidence and only had a 1 in a million chance of hitting her, it doesn't mean it was a stupid ending. It conveys how all the efforts of the MC can easily be dashed, unexpected things happen all the time and perhaps they were destined not to be together, and he fought destiny to such an extent that fate ended up ripping them apart. Truly an amazing heartfelt emotional story, which left a powerful ending with a punch to the face.

Even if there is a "bad ending", some people will take it as some symbolism, such as the whole "efforts of the MC can easily be dashed", as SweetPerplexity said. Matrix had an ending sort of like that, or at least in my mind it did, as even though the trilogy ended the way it did, there was good that came of it for people, such as in Zion...

Naruto Shippuden had a terrible ending.
I was hoping Madara would win, and Naruto and Sasuke would die.
The show should have ended at Episode 393 (titled: A True Ending)

Ah but she has the power of foresight, she should have known that it was going to happen but for no explainable reason did she see it coming. And the MC has some shounen like instinct ability to sense when danger was approaching but he didn't feel the truck coming. Again for no explainable reason, she just dies. The truck that hit them also is never seen again, as if it never existed in the first place. Also i agree it doesn't mean i needs to be stupid ending, it also doesn't need to be all roses. For instance instead of killing her off at the last second why doesn't she die when he is rescuing her at this point that ending isn't just bad it's a troll.
