How do you react to seeing controversial forum posts or threads, where people are just looking to start an argument of throw bait to get their thread going?

Do you dive into the flame wars and join the arguments?
Or do you avoid them and hope they go unnoticed/die slowly?

Everyone has an opinion, forums such as this allow them a level of anonymity to voice those opinions. Yes in some cases the person starting the topic is looking for a fight. In other cases it evolves into a fight based on the subject or a tangent from that subject. So unless you are willing to just remove forums from a service such as Crunchyroll which is perfectly within their right to do we are not entitled to free speech here since it is a privately own company. You are going to have controversial treads, this is a problem that is older than the internet these goes back to the days of the BBS.Even older than that used to be called the editorial column in the newspaper.

Now personally I love a good fight when it comes to ideas and opinions remember everyone has one. I like to give as good as I get but I have rules never make it personal. Never take it personally even if they insult you your family or your friends. If you take it personally you shouldn't debate makes it hard to walk away from it.

Threads tend to die out when folks lose interest in them this normally happens when one side is tired of debating the same points over and over again. This normally happens about five minutes after you hit the troll that is trying to keep the debate going as hard as you could. Trolls don't like pain you hit them with enough facts and reality and they run for the hills. Been fighting with them a long time as a professional IE moderator and privately never at the same time. That would just be mean.

If it's a topic I have any amount of interest in I might leave my 2 cents. If not I'll ignore.

But wouldn't you just forget what you learned? Since there are hundreds of CR users contributing to the thread? Unless you keep a diary on it. Then it's creepy.

As long as the conversation remains an intelligent one, it's fine. Because intelligent debates and arguments are kinda really awesome. I like seeing someone's view points that differ from my own. It would actually be really boring if everyone agreed with everything and no one was passionate about their beliefs.

If the title is a huge bait, I just go "uh-oh," but not all controversial threads are meant to start flamewars (it's really inevitable though). I usually just read them. I'll ignore them if they get too ugly though. There's usually 4 kinds of people who comment in these threads, sometimes more. People who actually contribute, people who start arguments, people who complain about the thread itself, and people who try to be random and witty. You're not safe, no matter what kind of post you make in these threads, so like I said, I just read them.

lol I'd have to make a thread on the rhetorical cork-board and pins, making sure to post pictures. All for the sake of making sure that someone here sees it.

I have a knack for memory recall, and I what I take mental notes of are pretty simple (though the "notes" aren't always intentional). Since many of us are forum regulars, I get pretty familiar with most everyone over time. It's really basic stuff, aside from the rare occasion when I consider someone downright repulsive or nasty. The "creeper" line is more of a personal joke than anything.

Nope a troll stands out so do the folks that are willing to fight them. You would be amazed at the things you find out about people based purely on what they are willing to fight over. So you keep a mental log of the good and bad isn't hard if you are on here enough. You also friend those that you share similar views with or not more than happy to friend someone I have a fight with best way to make them not fight is make them a friend.

We also tend to pick memorable avatars, I know I have seen several on this thread that have been in some heated flame wars.

the question is, what do you think is sarcasm? What is sarcasm? What makes things sarcastic? What you think may be sarcasm might be what someone else thinks is carrots.

it is all in the eye of the beholder. and parrots
