so im heading to phoenix comicon in a few months, and id thought it would be super cool to have some anime vehicle graphics for the trip.

so im posting this here as a log. dont expect greatness, and really dont expect success. expect me to fail.

so, with that out of the way, here is my plan.

jpeg to vector conversion - by hand. (no computer)
large scale connect the dots.
color by numbers.

i drive a toyota yaris, so the car is pretty small.

image im working with:

im shooting for 4 ft tall by 6ft if i leave her wings as is. 10ft if i rework her wings to full size.

not sure how i like this... might try to use a cnc plotter instead. a jpeg to svg tp gcode should be doable.
or a projector.

well, had to try something different. went the computer route. scaled up the pdf to 74" x 50" then printed out on 8.5x11 pages.
50 page document, 38 are actually needed.
might go with a B&W doc first. library laser printers are .10 black and white or .50 color.
so $5 for black and white or 25 for color.

well, it works!
kinda. at 6 feet it looks good. close up, meh.
its misaligned. i need to rework the image printouts, bigger overlaps, larger margins.
also, the assembly process is time consuming but no way around that. the masking tape im using tends to pull off parts of the paper.
weaker masking tape should help, as well as coating the image before hand with acrylic sealer.

next up is a quote for a printout. 50 pages. the library has a rocking laser jet printer, but 50 cents a page.
a dye based inkjet is out of the question as well.
a epson or pigment based inkjet printout should be waterproof-ish and should work.

damn, she looks good.
my many thanks goes out to the artist who did this.
time to go find a quote!

edit:

a close photo. the first one was only 3/5 done. this photo is all done. 50 inches tall, and my car measures 51 at the max. (printout is actually slightly larger than life size )
might need to trim her down.
its misaligned. due to the black and white prints. in color shouldnt be a problem. and next time ill have more overlap, and start at row 3, were the misalignment problem happened. still have to do some minor glueing and sealing before i can do a test fit on the car.
still not sure how im going to mangage to put it on with spray adhesive.

woah! test fit.
visablity is good for me. Ikaros head is in a blind spot anyways.
with the bow i can see to the side as well as the side view mirror.

test fit is..okay. really, the bow needs to be bigger, and the whole image is a bit too small for my taste.
ill try to scale it up by 2 or 3 inches if i can. ill have to work out how that works given the margin.
looks like 2 inches should do it.
maybe a tad further back. ill try to get a better shot from a better camera later tonight.

This is pretty dope. What type of media are you using for the adhesive? Are you printing yourself or taking to a shop?

Also, if you are worried at all about visibility I could probably find you a list of good one way printer material. But from your last post it looks like you've got it sorted.

not sure about adhesive at this point. probably a spary like 77 by 3m. semi perminent. the acrylic sealer seems to work well.
im using a laserjet color printer from the library. bloody expensive, but the quality is worth it, as well as the plastic print fuse thingy the laserjet uses comes out great.
all in all, it should be fairly waterproof, i think.

just using dollar store masking tape on the back, then gluing the overlap. ive been using tacky glue ( a PVA whilte glue variant) but not liking it. ill switch to a glue stick later. the entire thing will be sprayed with acrylic sealer front and back before i put it on the car.
cant really have her bow in the way, legally. well, under arizona law, there a law againts cargo obstructing you visablity, and another law states you need at least 2 mirrors, so there is no state law saying i cant. federal, i dunno.
either way, ill just move her back. the second print is ab out 6 inches less long, i changed the height to width ratio.

still need to print out the rest of the tiles, as well as rework her face. the raster to vector conversion was less than great on her face, *sigh*.
i got about a month till phoenix comicon. still need parking tickets and a cosplay. was thinking blood-c school uniforms. its low key enough i can get awa with it and just have people think im goth or something, lol.
should be pretty easy, looks like stich witchery and some blood red ribbon trim and modding a black dress shirt i wear a lot anyways. but that is another thread.

so far, assembly is the hard part. but im going for the 6 foot rule, looks good from 6 feet away anways.
sorry for the wall of text! i just think its soo cool. i might end up going with black and white, but im still undecided, and since the prints cost the same bloddy 50 cents either way. the library has two black and white laser jets, but they both need new toner. their cartridges are shot, and running low anways. suck for me. i know they have good resolution. i might just print off endless black pages and force them to change, muahahahahah!
