Hi,

On the general forum I posted a thread to gauge the habits of the Crunchyroll community on their thoughts on using adblock and their feelings about the ethics thereof.

Noticed the thread got locked, but no reasoning stated, nor as farvas I know I broke any site rules, so I was wondering if there is a glitch with the forums randomly locking threads?

I think it was obvious when you mentioned AdBlock

CR may be getting popular by the day, but they're like at the beginning of Google's fortune.

Well if adblock blocks the advertisements that are necessary for CR to make revenue off of free members(which is the reason free members can view video's in the first place), I can understand why mentioning it would warrant a lock.

CR does not to my knowledge, have automated moderation tools in place. If it did, those like myself would be redundant.

If a thread locked, its because somebody locked it. If no explanation was given, then it was bad moderating. Sometimes mods will lock down hot threads because they need to solve an issue, like ongoing flamebaiting, but rarely does a thread get locked for no apparent reason.

Can you provide a link to the locked thread? EDIT:

you mean this thread? http://www.crunchyroll.com/forumtopic-896135/do-you-use-adblock-on-crunchyroll

That didn't come across as a thread asking for oppinion, but rather a rant thread. Rant threads get locked because they're not productive.

Also, being a mod and not staff, I can't weight in on the adblock debate, but I see no reason honestly that they'd have issues with it unless its affecting your viewing and performance. At that point, then we'd tell you the problem is your addon, and let you figure it out.

Thanks for the response. I wouldn't characterize it as a rant thread, but one which invites discussion simply by stating facts: as the adblock software in question primarily is used to facilitate what users claim is a better user experience, it was, I felt, important to bring up examples which could be debated as to whether or not merit the use of such software (such as the maintence issues, etc.)

Beyond that was the question of ethics: is it ethical to use such software? What constitutes an ethical model of monetization of end user experience?

While the topic concluded by divulging my own thoughts on the need for a better model of monetizing end user experience, it reinforced both the question of end user experiences and of the ethics of the overall matter that could lead to fruitful, or at least entertaining, discussion on the forum.

I don't use the software myself, but the integration of third party software with Crunchyroll and sites in general does give me an interesting idea for a new topic.
