Hmm, well... China is surging ahead of America on the world stage and the other billion-person nation, India is a distance third in purchasing power. So obviously one type of economy works better than the other. Too bad it doesn't fit well in a democracy.

America has done a lot to handicap itself in the past and China's surge is relatively temporary. Up until recently the workers who were making those iPhones were killing themselves which tells us they are still pretty poor by US standards.

The way this poll is set up is it gives you 2 extremes and what seems like a reasonable middle ground that most people will chose.

Gallup this is not, and I never pretended it was. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much more than for people to choose between the options, post the system they consider ideal, and move on. It wasn't even supposed to be a discussion thread, or an in-depth poll.

Mixed. Some things the government should provide as public good via tax revenue and others the private sector is more suited.

If that's as in-depth as you'd like to get that's fine, but it's also alright to describe your ideal system in as much detail as it pleases you. There's no single "mixed economy", with everything from Nordic welfare capitalism all the way to quasi-libertarian "minarchist" systems. I can't possibly fit everything into a 5 option limit, so "Carthage must be destroyed" is sort of the "I don't see mine" option, too.

I honestly didn't expect this thread to survive more than about 12 hours. If I'd have known it would I'd have tried harder on the options.
