A number of Crunchyroll accounts have been hacked or stolen recently:

Crunchyroll itself does not have a security issue, however - just as is the case with any other website that offers subscription-based streaming services - criminals target the users of our site in order to gain access to those services.

Many users sadly tend to use the same email/password combination across several services/sites, even if those other sites/services are shady. What basically happens is: a shady site/service sells of its user data or is cracked and has its data dumped, this data is then used by both professional and amateur fraudsters and cross-checked against various other sites/services, such as ours, Netflix, Hulu, etc. in order to find accounts that are using the same email/password.

Those people then either use the accounts themselves, or sell them to others via leak boards. Once shared with others, those others often change the password and email address of the account, locking out the original owner and therefore finalizing the takeover.

What this basically means: Never use the same email/username/password combination or close variations on more than one site. Use complex, long, non-dictionary passwords even if sites/services allow simple passwords.

I use a plug-in / Add-on for my browser called "LastPass".

- https://lastpass.com/ (official site)

LastPass is basically a secure password manager. There are a few other, but I have found LastPass to be suitable for my needs. You don't need the premium version. The free version works just fine.

Here's a LifeHacker review of the 5 best password managers:

- Five Best Password Managers

All of those are excellent.

There are various ways to manage them... If you are willing to put faith in a 3rd party's security then things like https://lastpass.com/ are a simple option to use.

Most services don't store the actual string value of passwords and instead encrypt or hash them so hacking itself usually doesn't result in actual hijacking. What you really have to watch out for is fake/phishing sites or emails. Beware that it IS possible to spoof email so even if something is coming from what appears to be the correct domain you should never use links inside the mail.

Phishing and "social-engineering" are the more common methods of hijacking accounts. If you have a different randomly generated password on each service it becomes nearly impossible to compromise multiple accounts and you are also likely to be able to recover whatever you lost.

I use Avast EasyPass to store my log in details... It's pretty good at only a tenner a year.

I have them all in my notebook, hidden somewhere in my room. Hackers can try hacking my physical notebook all they want
