Silly Otakus, Anime's For Kids!(?)

Anime is for kids huh...I don't think that could be much further from the truth, at least in the west.

It seems actually very difficult to find child friendly anime ( I know, because I have been trying to find something for my younger sibling to watch). Most anime either touch on graphic violence, sexual themes, or mature storylines. Heck, by western standards I think some of the Magical girl anime would be deemed too graphic.

I think anime overall is a better comparison to television as a whole. You have many genres encompassing many different subjects, but saying "Anime is for kids" is like saying "Television is for the lazy".

I swear fanservice/beach/onsen episodes are in every anime, even the kiddy looking ones.

Do kids these days like those things too?

Anime is technically considered cartoon. But anime is just more specific in terms.
Anyways, who the hell cares...

Ah the dreaded "Anime is or isn't for kids debate" yes I am very familiar with this one. It's right up there with "Which is better subbed or dubbed?" and "What makes someone an anime fan?"...........we sure do have a lot of dumb arguments don't we?

They are both animation. They both can be for kids and adults. They both can have linear and episodic story lines. The only difference is what it's referred to, depending on the location.
Over here Spongebob is a Cartoon, in Japan it's anime
In Japan Tokyo Ghoul is anime, here it's a cartoon.
Calling something a cartoon does not mean it's for kids, but I do understand that it's a tendency for people to put cartoons with "being for kids"
If I'm trying to describe anime to someone unfamiliar with it I just say "they are Japanese cartoons". The person then understands which allows me to discuss it easier.

It all has to do with the location everything else is the same between the two.

I just call it anime because well........it's just the term used to describe Japanese Cartoon It also sounds better than saying Japanese Cartoons

Would I be the first if I said "depends on which anime" ? There is a very big difference between Pokemon and Tokyo Ghoul, of course all ages like both (and the latter by younglings no matter if parents approve ). The easy answer would be no, but specific anime might be more suitable for kids than others!^^

If you turn on Cartoon network and try to watch one of those anime its extremely easy to make a quick biased opinion because most dubs sound like they hire voices that appeal to ages under 12. Japanese voice actors sound more age neutral to me.. and the story lines of most anime is intended for those 13-17+.

But you cant blame people for the misconception even the major companies bringing it over and the voice actors themselves seem to have biased opinions and thats why these dubs sound the way they do.

Cartoon: a motion picture using animation techniques to photograph a sequence of drawings rather than real people or objects.
You know it's true.
Anime is cartoons, but that DEFINITELY does not mean it's for kids. I could probably name about 20 animes that are in NO WAY acceptable for children unless you want that child to be f**ked for the rest of their lives. I mean, a lot of adults can't even handle some of the stuff that happens in anime. So yeah, anime is definitely cartoons, but I'd say the majority of it is not appropriate for children.

All Shonen Jump adaptations are for kids obviously but they can be enjoyed by adults. Death Note was in the WSJ for crying out loud and that publication is aimed at boys aged 6-14.

Hardly any of my friends watch anime, none of them think "it's just for kids", even my mother in law knows it's not for kids. I think it's something people say when they are ribbing a fan of the medium or is perpetuated by a minority of people who have lived under a rock for the last 10 or more years.

Most people these days are aware of anime and that it's far broader than western animation. Therefore I don't think avoiding the word cartoon is all that necessary.

Love adventure time, well 30% of the time, Ice Kings back story was deep and has you in tears wen you find out everything he sacrificed to save a small child. But then they dump in all the mindless child shit that keeps the kids watching it as well.

cartoons / anime both are made for all ages, just because you are desensitized to more mature cartoons from America does not change the fact even America has adult cartoons.
