I'm not sure if Crunchyroll was set up this way before but at this point in time (4/11/2015), the site shows a few series with 1 episode currently released as having 2 videos available, yet when you click on them, it has "Episode 2 available in X days". I've seen a few of these "countdown videos" with 4-6 days listed.

Before today, I recall seeing these placeholder countdown videos like maybe 2-3 hours before a series was about to air/premiere but having a place holder for a show that isn't airing for 4-6 days is a little much.

I only mention this because I've been looking through the new shows airing this season trying to weed through and find what I want to watch and then I see a new video listed as series I like, only to click and find out it's actually a placeholder video. :/

Maybe I'm completely wrong about how long these placeholder videos have been around for, but it seems really recent and it's kind of misleading/annoying to me. Does anybody else feel this way? Am I alone in feeling let down when I see extra videos listed?

They have done that at least ever since I started watching here. It is inconsistently applied, true, but I think that possibly may have something to do with whether they actually have the show in house ready to go ahead of time, or if they haven't received it yet so they don't "jump the gun" and present false information they can't deliver on.

Since they deal with many different sources, not all of those are going to supply everything at the same time, or even necessarily be the same between shows. CR is purely at the mercy of their suppliers, and with usually about 40-50 episodes to sub and maintain each week, they probably get each of them done as soon as they have materials available so they don't fall behind.

All speculation, of course... I have no way to verify any of that. A business isn't going to divulge what it takes, behind the scenes, to deal with their suppliers or to present their product for business relationship and competitive reasons.

@Asharka, what you're saying makes sense, I guess I just got caught up in the inconsistency of how they decide where and when to post these placeholders. I mean to me, I don't even see the purpose of having placeholders in the first place? Just air the show when it airs and call it good, if there's a need for a placeholder to sync up simulcasts, I'd say they could put up the placeholder 30minutes to an hour before airtime, and syncing should be perfect. But a 6 day countdown? That just appears to be a waste of resources/effort that could be placed elsewhere.

Because to set up a site to deliver content, and wait for the last minute to put all the copies containing multiple resolutions (for the web) and also multiple hard-coded subs for each resolution in place for all the devices takes time. If you wait until the last second to put all that structure and linkage in place, you will consistently miss the time you promised.

Instead, by having the site programmed with release dates when the content will become deliverable lets you place everything ahead of time, and have it be ready at the moment of release. Of course, you can't do that if you don't actually have the materials, which is where CR is at the mercy of their (many multiple) suppliers.

If you look at one of the .rss pages for a show title, you will see data like this, that other than the date and time to release it, doesn't vary for an episode that is available and one which is not.

<crunchyroll:seriesTitle>Takamiya Nasuno Desu!</crunchyroll:seriesTitle>

Trying to get all those files ready for each episode for all those resolutions and language subs at the last instant just before it is supposed to air, so that someone doesn't get at it sooner and violate license agreements about air times would be pretty impossible...

It looks a lot more complex than I thought, that's for sure. I just feel like the placeholder videos themselves aren't needed til the last minute, or even a day before airing, All the other backend stuff makes complete sense to have it setup way beforehand and could be either omitted entirely, or at least set a certain standard. Instead of having a random placeholder from 1-6 days, just make all the placeholders setup for 2 days? I dunno. I guess I'd have to be on CR staff to know why exactly it's so random in the current setup.

TBH, I like having the placeholders, but agree it would be nicer if the time frame they went up was more consistent from show to show.

Why do I like them? Well it's an easy visual cue (especially on Roku which doesn't have the orange progress bar indicator on the queue thumbnails) that I"ve already completed the most recent episode of the show--so I don't waste time clicking into an episode and then discovering I've already watched it. The more shows that have a placeholder in place ahead of time, the less chance that I'll accidentally start rewatching an episode.

BTW, I"m going to move this over to the Suggestions / Feedback forum

I think it will be less confusing for you once we reach the 3rd episode for the new shows. Then the 2nd episode will not be listed twice any more and the upcoming one will be properly only listed as such.

@lorreen, thank you for moving the post, I kind of skimmed where to place the post, but I couldn't really figure out what area was most appropriate. I haven't ever used Roku to access crunchyroll, so I can't say for sure how that operates, I've only used my Playstation 3 or my home PC. The placeholders don't even seem to show up on the PS3 app, it just says "next episode X (days/hours)".

@Der Zoodirektor, oh that would be great, the double listing of episode 2 and then a countdown for 2 is the most misleading part. Because the way CR lists it makes it seem like episode 2 is already out! As I see it, it's a total error/oversight to have an episode listed AND a countdown listed?

The other problem is that it really f...... messes with the thumbnail view. Especially on the apps.

Having coming soon a day before a show airs is one thing. Having that instead of an episode thumbnail for multiple shows at the head of your queue for several days at a time is a pain in the bum.

Especially as, call me wierd, but a palceholder image being up for up to 3 days out of 7 doesn't imply "soon" to me.
