don't understand the point of forcing someone to marry another person
it's such a primitive tradition. not all traditions are good.

It depends on what the people in it want. People raised in the west are less likely to understand. Here, you're taught things like:
-My partner needs to be perfect for me
-Dating and breaking up several times is totally normal and acceptable
-If I'm not happy all the time, I shouldn't be married to the person
-I need to look out for my own interests because they are the most important
-I am entitled to choose to live my life exactly how I wish
-I must date around until I find someone perfect

My family was considering an arranged marriage for me but I declined and they backed off. In modern cases, the people usually have SOME say. It's not like they are being forced to marry with the threat of death or banishment.

An arranged marriage is just having a third party choose/match people to marry. Some people don't have the time or the means to date but wish to still start a family and whatnot. Arranged marriages can work if both people are willing to make them work. In my case, I have no desire to start a family and I feel better being by myself. I have things to do and have to become self-sufficient enough before I can consider marriage.

i dont think it has anythign to do with being raised in the West or the East.

i have read a lot of stories from Asia, where the girls drown themselves because they were forced to marry a man they didn't love... (and they also already have a boyfriend, but the parents wouldn't allow them to marry the boyfriend because of status difference).

some people will keep quiet and tolerate it, while others won't tolerate it and suicide is the only solution for them because they aren't financially independent.

You misunderstand. Not all arranged marriages are forced marriages. We mostly focus on forced marriages because those seem to create the most dissatisfaction. And now people all think arranged marriages are forced. I do agree that forced marriages are probably not the best thing, but there are merits to arranged marriages.

The concept is FAR less prevalent and common in the west, so westerners are less likely to understand. They didn't grow up in it and they don't talk about it much and they have different values.

Blind forced marriages should be a thing of the past. Even people getting arranged marriages nowadays usually get a chance to meet each other and exchange a few words.

I think also there's situations where the people involved have SOME choice, it's just your families choose the candidates.

Well, at least instead of an ugly wife, his 'image' is now famous as being dragged out of a lake half dead after a failed suicide. What a tool

I don't really care about the man but rather, I thought forced marriages were extinct. Kinda reminds me of slavery which apparently still exists.

Marrying an unattractive woman is bad for his image? So getting fished out of a river, because you tried to kill yourself, does wonders for it?

He better hope he doesn't suck in bed, cause that will be another thing he's bad at.

I'd have to criticize his decision to try and drown himself, but otherwise, good for him for putting his foot down. It may be rude, but I guess it's necessary to just be honest when it affects his life so heavily.

"She was bad for my image." Huh. I wonder what he thought of his image when he saw this picture.
