Try being an Australian and asked if we ride around in kangaroo pouches or race emus, play didgeridoos like it's the one and only instrument we all play, or keep koalas and wallabies as pets. Heck, even asked how we all survive with there being numerous venomous snakes and spiders about in our backyards.

But I suppose that is nothing compared to knowing the difference between a single country and a kingdom comprising of four countries.

A surprising amount of Americans don't even know much about their own country.

Do you know how common it is for derps to think that New Mexico is a part of Mexico?

That would seem a bit pointless, unless maybe the 13 first colonies, even then...still kinda pointless...

The U.K. is Scotland, Wales, England, and Northern Ireland.(per OP) Great Britain is the geographic island that Scotland, England and Wales are on, and Ireland is the Island next to it. Ireland, Britain and a bunch of smaller islands around there are all called the British isles.
I know nothing of culture.

So now you can say somebody from America knows a few differences. I'd have more trouble with my own country actually, more to memorize.
Hopefully that's all right anyways.

I had a coworker (here in the U.S.) tell me that West Africa is a country. ... Never underestimate the stupefying extent of ignorance here. It makes my head hurt.

It's come to my attention that a lot of Americans on the forums seem to think that the UK is England. I'm here to tell you it's not, the UK is made up of 4 countries; Scotland, England, N.Ireland and Wales and they all have their own distinct differences and separate cultures.

In too many situations in real life have i told people i'm from the UK and they have asked me "oh you like tea then?" in a horrible English accent, to which my usual reply is "naw, i'm Scottish" or "Fuck off". And I've actually had a few people say they are "more free" than me because I 'live in a monarchy' when in reality the queen is just a figure head that is used to draw more money into the country (she doesn't actually do anything, she's just basically a celebrity)

I don't want to sound like i'm putting down Americans or anything, but do they not teach them anything about the UK?

All they really teach in American schools is that they beat the British to earn their freedom in the American Revolution and that 164 years later Britain comes back begging to be saved by the Nazis.

The news outlets take it from there, informing the public that the UK is America's sidekick in all of it's adventures.

Its a confederacy consisting of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. That's all there is to it, really.
