Not only does it suggest audience participation, but they are somehow hugely popular.
I never knew solo games would work as spectator sports instead of being dropped by people that get bored quickly and want to play.
I have half a mind to do a lets play spider solitaire.

I'd assume they're mostly for people who dont have the funds or ability to play games, some of them can be pretty entertaining.

What would you rather do as a 10 year old on days that aren't Christmas or your birthday? Do chores and earn the $40 bucks needed to buy a game or watch a free YouTube video about it?

Let's Play videos are really popular with that group. Mature Let's Play videos catch the attention of broke ass high school/college kids who haven't made up their mind on whether or not to spend the $60 on the game.

Letś plays are pretty entertaining depending on whoś playing and what game. You ever hear of the super best friends?
Check them out some times, those scrubs are pretty entertaining at times.

I'm not a "massive" fan of then, but I do watch a few every now and then and really enjoy them. Usually for one of two reasons.

1) They're playing a game that I also play and it's interesting to see their perspective on things. Even with more "solo" games, it's like the equivalent of sharing a book or a story. It's always entertaining to see how other people interact with the story or a challenge.

2) They're playing a game i'm interested in, but have no interest in buying. For example, I recently watched a Shadow of the Colossus let's play. I've always been quite interested in that game, but I don't have a PS2 to play it, nor do I really "want" to play it badly enough to buy one. I was just kind of interested in how the bosses worked and what the story was. The let's play was quite good for that and is more entertaining than just reading a wiki.

Plus, sometimes the personality of the player is just entertaining to watch. I think the personality of certain people is what makes them "popular". It's no different from any other popular YouTube personality (even among niche groups).

Before I started watching them, I was also quite cynical towards let's plays. I think they're a pretty fun way to build an added layer of community around inherently "solo" games. Or even multiplexer games with a heavy story element. But that's just my take

When I was 10, I had more options than that.

I agree. I've watched the beginning of a few Let's Play videos before, but I don't think I've ever made it all the way through even one. I don't see the appeal. At best, they just make me want to play the game myself.

Among the reasons that have already been mentioned, I add that there can be a sliver or two of sadism involved.

Good tips, plus funny commentary, what's not to like. For MMO's I like seeing first looks, character customizations, gameplay, game mechanics, pvp. And for dark souls I love the ones where they have kills of the week, showing amazing kills. I actually picks some of those techniques and used it in my game-play. It was the pyromancy poison cloud that I used as smokescreen and then shot a lightning bolt through it. So beautiful. Then some magic dagger back stabs when people get close, takes so much health from them.

While you're considering it, throw in Minesweeper... and Hearts too.
