Generally there are three reasons I'll watch a Let's Play of a game:

1) To determine if it's worth purchasing. Forget trailers, reviews and demos. One of the best ways to get an idea of whether a game is worth your money is by watching someone play the actual game for a bit.

2) No time. The two types of games I watch most often are ones that either require a lot of experience grinding (helpfully done off camera), or that have a steep learning curve (where the Let's Play acts as a large tutorial). I work. I simply don't have the time to sink a hundred hours into a game.

3) The commentary. Let's Players can be pretty entertaining in their own right. Some are borderline standup comics, while others treat the Let's Play as a blog of sorts and discuss various topics of interest to them.

I don't even have time for that shit.

Since most games are basically movies anyhow, I just watch the cutscene compilations and call it a day. I don't have to buy the game or play it, and I get to watch the story.

I don't mind a simple little review but 89 epsiodes of minecraft... really?
Its like they say, if ya put it on tv people will watch it. In this case if you put it on the internet people will watch it regardless.

Let's Plays are kinda hit or miss. But I must say I do enjoy some of them. Although before that I was really like "WTF?! Why the hell is this popular?! WHY?!" But now I enjoy them myself lollll...

Not sure how to answer why I like them, I guess some of them just make me laugh and cheer me up. Game Grumps (Jon/Arin) has made me do this plenty of times. The chemistry between them was great and the random conversations they had while playing.

The appeal isn't there for me, that is certain. While certain videos like that can be fun, I am not gonna watch 40 parts that are 20 minutes each.

Lets plays go back to a basic mentality. Games are awesome, even if you can't play them. Kind of like being in an arcade and hanging around and watching someone play a game even though you're out of quarters.

I watch Let's Plays because its fun. Plus, it helps save me money to buy which games I think is enjoyable. Also check the YouTube channel of Let's Play by Rooster Teeth they're hilarious!!!

People, (Me) usually watch 'lets plays' because they either do not own that game, or want to know if it is any good, or you get the occasional person who watches it to watch the person doing the 'lets play'

I'm subscribed to a few YouTube channels that do this... And let's plays are fun to watch because they give me ideas on what to play next and I just like the person doing it. I mean, every YouTube channel is you reacting to what someone is doing, this isn't any different.

I tend to watch Let's Plays of story games / JRPGs over actually playing them myself.

Those games really don't have much you can gain from actually playing it yourself. The battles are generally simplistic and not challenging. There is a lot of pointless collection involved. There are hidden secrets that simply involve being at the right place at the right time.

When you watch an informed Let's Play on the other hand, you get information and trivia about the game and related games, you get all the special secrets without having wasted your time, and you can skip things that boil down to mindless busy work absorbing only what is important about the game itself.

The games that I do play are ones that I can play multiplayer or that involve actually getting good at the game. Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne for example have a pretty high learning curve, they are hard and you will die a lot in them. I will play those myself and then I will watch a Let's Play afterward to see other people's experiences with them.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So yeah... I know it sounds like an asshole thing to say, but I will probably never buy a simple story game.

Someone who enjoys gaming, and can't afford a strategy guide, or doesn't care for spoilers , or simply enjoys them. If you think they are overrated, avoid them. I've watched a few and I am not really a gamer, so, some of the commentating is annoying and I'll prefer longplays, which is just gameplay without the chatter.
