This is the most random thought i had the other day but i was wondering what does it feel like playing GTA for people who aren't born in or haven't lived in america?

As an american when i played the most recent GTA5 I was like cool it looks like Los Angeles (Does usual GTA stuff)

But i never considered what it would be like if i wasn't around american culture all the time.

Did it make you think were all horrible people?
Did you feel like you got to see a glimpse of the inside of america?
Did you not really care and just steal cars all day? lol

I may be going into this too much but I'm curious....

I think we just call it car theft.

But when I play games set in America, I go site seeing.
I was a tourist in fallout 3, always took scoped weapons to know where to visit next.

An interesting way to be introduced to Urban American pop culture. Hopefully teens won't be foolish enough and attempt to reinact some of the things in those games.

I'd think most non-U.S. players would understand that the GTA games are a very satirical depiction of the United States similarly as most non-Japanese would understand that most anime is not an accurate portrayal of average Japanese life either.

US has lot of influence over here, specially when it comes to media platforms. USA centric things doesn't stand out at all. '

I'm Scottish and go to the same university as the people who originally made the series apparently. However, it is just a big parody of American culture really. It has the ghost of real to it but only enough to make you laugh at the fact it's half true. When you remember that there are actually people like that you kind of lose a bit of faith in humanity. I know that America isn't really like that but GTA makes fun of all the bad parts of American culture. The game world is a big parody of America - that's how I think about it.

As a guy from England, I can honestly say over here we're subjected to so much culture from areas in America be it on TV or in movies or the internet, games, and it goes on, so it's not too hard to form a rough idea of what it's like. I'm personally well aware that GTA is a caricature of the modern world, and everyone is a dickbag in the games, and I refuse to believe there's a country where literally everyone you come into contact with is a psychotic asshole. I've heard some people say that GTA V captured the essence of Los Angeles with Los Santos rather well, so that was pretty interesting. I mean, it looks like a convincing place so I'm assuming there's nothing inherently strange there. For the most part you just roll with the stories and characters though, much like you would with a film or whatever. So much of what we consume is from the US that it isn't really that jarring by this point, at least to me.

As for a game in another location? Maybe it's because I'm from England but I would like a modern one set somewhere in the UK. It would probably be a city that's based on London but if it could get some countryside areas in there, I don't know, it would just be nice to have somewhere relatable where I can do all the things the real world restricts me from. You could argue there'd be restrictions like an unarmed police force, busy roads, and so on but hell, it's a game, take as many liberties with it as you need. There are maybe 1 or 2 open world games that come to my mind which have London as the game world and that's it. I've actually heard quite a few people say they'd like GTA 6 to be somewhere other than America.

So yeah, the short version would be that it's so hard to escape witnessing American culture that you'd have to pretty much live under a rock to not have some understanding of how it maybe ties in with the culture and how it doesn't. Of course it comes at the cost of some relatability but by this point so much fiction is set in the US, and we both speak rather similarly, so it's accessible and hard to miss.

I'm pretty sure they have a basic idea. America is well-known for its sex, money, and drugs.

I did think it was essentially a set of games based off of an outsiders view of the USA, based largely on movies and tv. hence the crazy crime levels and the increasing seriousness.
It's like if someone from america made a game about the uk if they'd only watched vinnie jones/ gangster movies

Some part of the US are even worse than GTA, unfortunately.

Canadian here. We all know it's an exxageration of the worst parts of the US. Sure you guys can buy guns, and in some states walk around with them. But we know nobody's gonna pull out an RPG, then a grenade launcher then a minigun.
