In a lot of countries, people eat cat meat or dog meat. This spawned many racist jokes that are hard not to make when the subject comes up. It's like talking about catholic alterboys, you gotta make a tasteless joke.

But in all honesty, I see animals as equal. Why is it wrong to eat dog, but okay to eat chicken. And chickens in america have it worse than dogs in china. Really they have it just as bad.
And pigs are a lot like humans. When doctors do autopsies in training, they use pig organs sometimes. And their brains are close to humans as well. It's rumored that human flesh tastes like pork. And a pig can make just as much of a pet as a dog.
So saying, "dogs have minds too close to humans", is kinda bullshit when we keep pigs in hellish slaugherhouse condition.

I'm just saying, those of us in the western world are kind of hypocritical when it comes to eating dog vs. eating pigs/cows/chickens

It depends on the values of the culture in question. In India, for instance, cows are sacred and they don't eat them. Pigs amd cows and chickens can be pet animals as well. How we perceive each animal and how we value each animal depends on our cultural values.

Freakin' beat me to it, I see. Happens to me a lot. I think of a good response, scroll down a bit, and then bam: it's taken. I must not be that original.

Some people feel that as companion animals, they deserve a greater amount of respect, generally for reasons some people may oppose cannibalism. Some people extend a similar taboo to other animals, like horses. It depends largely on the cultural views of the animal, as well as values that are placed on death and the bodies that are left behind.

I don't really have a desire to eat dogs, cats, or horses, or any other such animals, but I don't think I would be opposed to the practice if it became the norm. I imagine that cat wouldn't taste good and that dog would have a poor texture, but I really don't have any idea. I've not that that many types of meat: beef, pork, chicken, fish, and frog (once), so I am not any sort of expert.
