What is Russia planning? Was this just a drill? Or are they preparing for a war?

They do this regularly in the Baltic region. Get a little too close to foreign airspace and force NATO or individual countries to scramble alert aircraft to intercept. They stopped when the cold war ended, but Putin wants the old USSR back

A war they would lose, and they know it. I seriously doubt it's anything more than comparing dick size.

I'd be more worried about what Japan is doing now that they've "modernized" Article 9 of their Constitution.

They should be allowed some fly-bys since NATO thinks its cool to run manuevers, drills, and have military parades practically on their doorstep.

Sure NATO might do those, however NATO pilots have the intelligence and consideration of using transponders so that other aircraft is aware of their presence. Something Russians have yet to learn. There have already been many close calls with Russian jets and civilian commercial airlines and air traffic control that did not see them.

Russian jet nearly collides with US plane over Baltic, Ivan stay off the bottle:

NATO pilots do not have a habit of making pretend bombing runs on other countries either.

People need to calm the fuck down. They think WW3 is going to start over the smallest of things.

Russia is just rattling their sabres let us know that they are not to be fucked with. That being said, I highly doubt they will intentionally start WW3. Putin isn't stupid, he might stretch the limits to see how far he can go, but he won't start a large scale war knowing that pretty much the entire world is against him.

Also keep in mind that the Russians (as in the population) are as scared of us as we are scared of them.

Nobody starting WWIII people. Itś much easier to trade with people these days than to conquer them.
War small war is expensive. A world war is a logistics nightmare.
