I know virtually nothing about Death Note, so I would have to say I'd destroy it. If that isn't a realistic option, I would make sure no one would make use of it.

Many would consider me evil even though I am not; the same holds true for other people. I could never force myself and my values onto other people in such a way... No body should hold that power or even want it.

kill all occupants of political positions. Watch the chaos unfold. Most likely die in the civil unrest.

I'd probably use it to kill people I read up on, generally to make sure they are bad people. I'd offer services to people that want to die peacefully, like old people.
I'd also probably use it to help some people like Mr. Hawking - Hawking will be immediately cured of his paralysis disease through such and such thing which will end up killing him with an aneurism 12 years later. - Or this guy will wake up from his coma to comfort his wife for the day (knowing he's going to die soon) before passing in his sleep.
I doubt I'd use is 100% wisely - I'd kill politicians I loathe. I thought about writing evil businessmen but then I have to look at the implications of killing them off and if it'd do more harm then good. Probably would have used it on the top Wallstreet Execs that got off scot-free.

I'd be an overall horrible deathnote carrier. But maybe I would reduce social security costs on us by limiting those using it. - study finds death walked into Sunny Hills Retirement home last night because all but a few of the younger old folks are dead. Super fat people with no remorse or will to lose weight would get murdered. I'd probably try to clear prisons of the worst inmates. I'd probably screw Syria up more with killing Bashar Al Assad off and having the government faction run around like a chicken with its head cut off (you know, probably cause a civil war within the government faction sadly).

I'd try to find out most of north korea's top leaders to kill them off and hopefully start a revolution unite korea. Kill Fidel Castro peacefully. I don't think it'd be a good idea to kill Vladimir Putin.

So many tough choices. Could you imagine creating a Death Note Consultation firm.

Once more, I'd be a horrible deathnote carrier.

Burn it or give it to the government. I'd be afraid of how it affects the afterlife and I wouldn't wanna let another person use it either.

lol why would you hand it over to the government? that's the most dangerous thing you can do

Pretty sure the first name they write would be yours... couldn't have anyone knowing they have it, right?

For science. The choice being government came off the top of my head but if you don't hand a supernatural phenomenon over to [insert organization] with the power to learn to use it responsibly and fund research on it, what would that be? A waste. Death notes have infinite pages which would indicate infinite energy for example. It will eventually fall into their hands anyways unless the choice to dispose of it is taken.

While I could have it delivered in a closed package on my deathbed, much time for progress would be lost which isn't good for the no-oil left crisis we may have by that time. I could gamble with sending it anonymously but meh, tracking.

I wouldn't be messing with it, there would be no contact with the Death Note and my hand. I have no desire to have something like that in my life

If such a thing existed I'd write my death in it. I'd give myself a long life even up to 99. I'd have a good quality active old age until I drop dead suddenly one day. Once that's done I have no need of the book.

maximum length is something like a month... You really don't want to write your own name in a Death Note

Well I'd be morally destroyed as soon as I noticed it.
Cause If I refused it then I'd be responsible for the actions of whoever got it
if I didn't use it then I'd be responsible for the fates of all the people I could have saved
If I used it then I'd basically become Archer (Fate:Stay Night) and that is not a good path...
I'd just get driven mad...

I'd touch the book to gain the ability to see shinigami. Then I'd consider whether to get the shinigami eyes or not. Then I'd prepare to destroy the book, and if the shinigami protested I would point out that there can be no happy ending for a human who uses a death note even once. It says so right in the rules: humans who use the death note to kill vanish upon dying. You're removed from whatever afterlife or reincarnation cycle exists in that world forever. No matter what name you write down in a death note first, you wrote your own name down as soon as the pencil or pen met the paper.

If there's no set maximum time then I would.

Fair enough... Hmm but hypothetically anything can happen to you within those 99 years. What if you ended up in a situation that should have killed you the next day and then just couldn't die...
