Why Sentai Filmworks?

How do people feel about Sentai Filmworks? At first I didn't like them because I thought they never released dubbed anime, but before making this I decided to check and was surprised that they do have dubbed anime. However, they are seem to be releasing more subbed anime instead. I was also surprised at how many great shows they have, some examples are Dog x Scissors, The familiar of zero (most of the series), Haikyu!!, Space Brothers, Log Horizon, Medaka Box, Flowers of Evil, Phi Brain.

Honestly, I think Sentai could (in the future) become a powerhouse with an inventory like that, but I do question their methods. I think they have more subbed released anime than dubbed, and their anime tends to be packaged with around 12 episodes in a set with the set usually around $50.

I guess with all that said, how do you feel about Sentai Filmworks?

They are a fragment of a former powerhouse AD Vision or ADV. ADV was so big it was publishing NewType USA, had it's own Anime Network for cable subscription and had tons of well known and not so well known good shows, not sure if they pioneered the thinpack but the certainly used it a lot, and packed whole 26 episode series for reasonable prices (sometimes under $50)

Then they broke up, folded their magazine and tv network, sold half their catalogue to Funimation and left a tiny rump of their former selves called Sentai.

as to how I feel about them. ... lingering warmth for the remnant of the company that brought me Evangelion, Blue Seed, Devil Lady, The Macross saga, The Slayers OVAs, (but most for EVA)

sentai is the bottom for me.

The only show I have or will buy from Sentai is the Knights of Sidonia CE Box Set.

The only way I will buy more from them is if they re-release series with CE Box Sets. (shinsekai yori pls).

Their method of just giving you a blu ray case with no extras is annoying to me.

FUNimation offers more for the money when it comes to physical collection, and usually a much better dub than Sentai does. Sentai also generally costs more than FUNimation collections, unless you buy them on sale.

also, I have a thing against them based on their previous life as AVD Films.

I only buy stuff from Funimation through amazon.

They are the only ones who sell BD's for a reasonable price.

My current collection of only 12 shows (which have atleast two different box sets) costed me about 700$ (Since I live in the Bahamas currently)

Other than some quality control issues that pop up from time to time, I love Sentai. When their stuff goes on sale it is the cheapest of any anime company. $25 to $30 for a complete cour of anime on Blu-ray.

I don't mind Sentai and will buy a show from them if it's one I like. But I almost always prefer to get show from Funimation and NIS America. I own maybe 5-7 series from Sentai, where as I probably have over 20 series from Funimation.

I like Sentai, mainly because I can play their Blu-rays with out having to buying a region free Blu-ray player. I have 5 of their Blu-rays, 2 pre-ordered and waiting for Shirobako and Haikyuu! part 2.

One thing I think they can improve on is to add an option to turn off Translator notes.

They have all 4 series. The only item they might be missing is the single OVA, and they may have it as a disc-only inclusion.

When criticizing a company for doing sub-only releases, keep in mind some series simply wouldn't generate enough sales to finance a dub, which would mean they would never be released by a dub-only company.

My only real complaint with Sentai is the lack of extras on the DVD/BRs. What matters most to me in my purchasing decision is how well I like the anime. I recently got Dog & Scissors on BR and it is Sentai, Unfortunately not been able to watch it yet in the rehab hospital (physical rehab) and look forward to Monica Rial as Yayoi (sp?).

I like Sentai because they rescued Kannazuki no Miko and brought the original Casshern to North America.

Do not like how they made the picture quality of KnM not as beautiful as Geneon's release.

Also not enough Blu Ray releases.

Most of my blurays are from Sentai, NIS, or Aniplex. I've pretty much sold most of my Funimation stuff, not really buying much from them anymore.

I always looked at it this way....

If you want Bare bones and crappy LE releases, go with funimation. ( I should drive 3hrs to their HQ in Dallas and smack someone)
If you want decent LEs but sometimes awesome CEs, go with Sentai
If you're just that rich a-hole, go with Aniplex :v

I really hate how Funi grabs a well know anime (like Noir) and just shoves it as a "Anime Classics" BD release and doesn't give it a proper CE. Then again, Funi's idea of a LE, CE is so stupid.
