I generally have my own rule that will depend on the show and my interest level. Shows with lower interest level generally get a shorter leash, and they get 1 or 2 episodes. It's rare that I give up on something after 1 episode, and I give up on most shows after 2 or 3 episodes if it's crap or fails to capture my interest. 4 episodes is usually my limit for shows on probationary status and after watching episode 5, I generally commit myself to watching it through to the end.

If I can't find a single thing I find appealing in a show after 3 episodes or there is at least ONE thing I like but the rest is painful to watch, then I think it's a sign I should drop it.

Life is short and I actually have a very busy life. I don't have the time to give all anime 3 episodes. If there's nothing in the first episode that is interesting or enjoyable to me, I drop it. If the first episode isn't quite there but seems like it has potential (there's something about it I find interesting or enjoyable, even if the episode as a whole isn't very good) then I'll give it another episode or two. But as soon as I lose interest, I drop it, no matter how many episodes I've watched.

I usually always try to follow the 3 episode rule for my drops. I've dropped things on the second episode before, but I've actually dropped a lot of things mid way through the show like on episode 7 or episode 9.

Sometimes I think it'll get better and I stay around and I'm still disappointed then I drop it. I like to think the 3 episode rule is good because you gave the show a chance. I'm not a fan of dropping shows after an episode or even 2, but I've done it before. A recent example would be Re-kan, I dropped it after episode 2, but I'm pretty for certain that it will stay roughly the same the entire season so I don't regret it.

I tend to follow the rule, unless something is really bugging me about the show. I dropped Triage X halfway thru the first episode, I just don't want to pick up another show with that much fanservice, but no real story. On the other hand, if I hear that something gets toned down later, like shokugeki no soma, then I'll hold longer.

Basically I follow the rule with 3 exceptions which lead to earlier drops:
1) All fanservice, no story
2) Heavy censorship either due to DVD/BD sale, or timeslot
3) Too depressing (Saikano, any Studio Key work that isn't Angel Beats!)

Sometimes though I've temporarily dropped a show that I later realized was better, for example, Gintama, which I found hard to get through the first season's huge amount of character intro episodes.

Have to admit, my 3 ep rule is partly based on old DVD purchases, when that was an annoyingly somewhat standard number of eps on the first disc - so I'd watch the whole thing because I paid for it, at the very least.

I do still try to keep to it, since first eps try to go to the EXTREME, and may not represent what the series will be. Or, on the flip side, sometimes they start off slow, but build into something quite enjoyable. But, with the number of shows available these days thanks to streaming, I'm more willing to drop something even after (or during) one episode if it rubs me the completely wrong way.

that doesn't work on One Piece. That show starts well past the 20th episode!

this rule is as effective as the 3 seconds food dropping on the floor rule.

you just never know when an anime will get interesting. sometimes it can be the third episode. sometimes it's the second season is where it gets interesting. personally i liked season 2 of aldnoahzero, but found it hard to make it through the first season.

I thought that was 5 second not 3 seconds?

more like the 1-2 episode rule for me. 3 is too much if its 12 epi it is already 1/4 over. Some times I am just not in the mood for that type of show I just watched. But if I go pass that I usually finish, unless it is really long.

For me, I'd watch a fourth of an anime before I judge on whether I want to continue.

For 12-13ep, 3 eps.

For 24-25ep, 6eps.

And so on.

Now, I'm not sure how this would apply for huge shows like Naruto, One Piece or Fairy Tail, but I guess it's all up to you.

I just go by whether it still interests me. Even if it's shit, if I'm interested, I won't drop it. I've also finished shows where only the music (once only the opening) was good and I stuck around for just that...and to laugh at the funny comments below.

I have weird anime watching patterns

It's 4 eps rule for me well usally the first eps is to sell the show and the show settles into what is going to be about.

Of course there are some show out there that are really bad right from the get go..

I have a 1 episode rule...Usually the first episode is enough for me to determine whether or not I want to continue watching a particular anime.
