Some shows you can tell right off the bat that they aren't for you.

And some shows you have hopes for. The storyline seems appealing and the first couple eps are okay, but then something goes wrong. It might be a character you just can't stand or the plot goes somewhere you don't like.

Ran into a couple of those shows this season.

Here is one anime that should have gotten its boring parts out of the way in 3 episodes. Instead it was so dull and mindnumbing for 6 episodes.

Really you could fall asleep watching this anime it was so dull. However after episode 6, shit hits the fan and it becomes a rollercoaster ride of mindfucks for the last half of the series.

I actually initially dropped this series. I picked it up again after finding out later how the series ends. It was the same thing with School Days for me actually. The ending of the series is so awesome that it's worth watching the rest of the series just to enjoy the ending to its fullest, no matter how horrible the beginning of the series may be.

That rule sucks.
I rarely drop a series, and when I drop it, I do it when I feel like doing it.
It could be in the half part of the first episode, or one episode before the ending.
But like I said, I rarely drop something. I carefully read the synopsis, check what the studio is, and try to predict how the story will be before watching something.

Flaws of the rule:
An example would be Cross Ange which its first episodes were not well received by most people (people who dropped it), but it got really amazing after that.
Another close example would be Madoka which gets interesting at the end of the third episode.

I don't support this rule.

Typically it's now 4-5, had to increase since i dropped a few shows and end up hearing about them and end up redoing them.

Haruhi is a prime example of a show with that rule, nearly dropped one of the best shows except for ep 4 that turned the whole show on it's head.

There are some shows where you can go well beyond the 3 ep rule and then drop it, wolf's rain i dropped around 16-17 since the show just felt like it was going in circles and not explaining anything. I try not to drop shows but there are some that just fail to live up to the expectations and some that just don't appeal to every fan.

this rule is as effective as the 3 seconds food dropping on the floor rule.

you just never know when an anime will get interesting. sometimes it can be the third episode. sometimes it's the second season is where it gets interesting. personally i liked season 2 of aldnoahzero, but found it hard to make it through the first season.

I thought that was 5 second not 3 seconds?

Thank you for correcting me.

This!!!! I've dropped things in under 30s. Often you can just tell it's going to be bad or in the reverse cases, often in the first 30 seconds or 3 minutes you just know it's going to be completely awesome all the way until the end.

I've also dropped a series at episode 11/12. If it's making me cringe every few seconds, I drop it. Or maybe, just maybe I'll try episode 12 if 11 was that bad. I've also dropped shows during the final episode if the wrap up is just too stupid to be believed. I only watch shows if I'm enjoying them. There is no point in forcing myself to watch something just to say I've finished it.

No episode 3 rule for me. Enjoying=watch. Not enjoying=drop.

everything this.

if I don't enjoy a show, whether it's been 1 episode or it's almost finished, I'll drop it. and yes, there are times when you just KNOW that it will never get any better than your first impression, and it's best to just turn it off and walk away.

I dropped that one too...

What happens?

I may go back and watch it if it's really worth it.

EDIT: Also, the quoted comment is exactly why if there's an exception to the three ep rule, you'll still learn about it: SOMEBODY out there has stuck with it probably, and can let you know.

Except with Cross Ange, I've now dropped at ep 15-17 because it just took nosedive again... Kinda had that feeling since ep 13

I follow the "watch the whole damn thing before judging it" rule. I don't always watch something all at once, sometimes taking a hiatus before finishing something that just isn't catching my interest at the moment, but I eventually go back to it. My favorite shows often tend to be late bloomers, and I would honestly have far less interest in anime as a whole if I had given up more shows that didn't immediately grab me.

This rule does not apply to long running shounen series. You have to watch atleast 20 episodes of them to see if it gets interesting.
Eg: Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Gintama etc.

I agree with the 3 episode rule for the 12-13 episode anime.

If the idea of dropping a show even crosses my mind I just drop it. There's no point sitting through three episodes of something you know is not to your taste, it'll just make you hate it even more. The only exception is if the show is Glasslip-level shit: then you have a duty to watch the entire thing and ridicule the fuck out of it.

This right here, is fact, if it's at Glasslip level then it totally deserves all the hate it generates. I still start to see red when this title comes up

I also had dropped Blood-C after a few episodes but went back and watched it. I believe it is definitely worth a second chance. After all animes are more like food for thought than a dusty cookie on the floor. If it's chocolate chip I am picking it up!
