You may want to clean your link to that show. Your URL above includes a time stamp that drops you part way into the episode.

Idol anime: Love Live! - [email protected]
Magical Girl anime: Shugo Chara! - Tokyo Mew Mew - Sailor Moon - CCS
Kyoto Animation anime: Hibike! Euphonium (Airing now), K-ON!, Chuunibyou, Tamako Market, Clannad, heck even Hyouka. Kyoani's anime is lighthearted and even if some of their series have darker aspects I still think they're good starters.

I'd say Ouran, it's a good romcom that's not really explicit, but silly.
Fruits Basket was basically my starter shoujo, I was twelve when I started watching/reading it and I think a 12 year old can handle it.

Woah, this was my first forum here and I am surprised and elated by all the feedback, thanks! Someone mentioned K-ON which just so happened to be my first anime so that is definitely going on my list. And my sister is sort of tom boyish so Durarara is not crossed off the list.

However what do you guys think of FMA Brotherhood do you think that is ok?

It's rebellious and high schooly, it's perfect for a 7th grader! If all else fails, show her Dragon Ball.

If you're looking for something with more action, FMA:B would be a great choice (i havent seen it, but i did read the manga and i heard they are very similar). the only potencial problem is that it is a bit long at 64 eps.

You could also go with Baccano! It isn't terribly different from western media but is still an exelent show. Also its by the same people as DRRR.

Pssh~ 12 years old? I highly doubt any person at that age today is as innocent as we were back then. But it's totally understandable that you don't want to show your sister that anime quite yet. At that age I was watching Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, and Ranma 1/2, why not give those a try? Better yet just sit your sister down in front of a lineup of anime and just let her pick and chose based on the trailers.

Read or Die (don't let the title fool you)
Rinne (which is being simulcast right now)
Non Non Biyori
Galilei Donna
Robotics;Notes
Ghost Hunt
Kindaichi Case Files
Case Closed
And possibly Nisekoi

Are all titles fitting of a 12 yr old girl but would also keep the interest of young male anime fans. They're a variety of different genres.

Kiss x Sis

...

JOKING!

Sorry it's just too easy of a joke to make.

In all seriousness I don't think F.M.A Brotherhood is too mature for a 12 year old. If F.M.A Brotherhood is one of your favorites and you want to show it to her go ahead.

It all comes down to what you think you personally are comfortable letting her see. Are you concerned with violence? Are you concerned with sexual content? Are you concerned with complicated psychological ideas (suicide, depression, etc.)? It comes down to personal opinion. Some would say that being exposed to things like this early (with appropriate explanation) can develop maturity (sex education was neglected for a long time in high schools which potentially caused many unwanted pregnancies due to simple ignorance). Others would argue it risks being misinterpreted by younger people and could cause them to make bad decisions (some may argue that being exposed to ideas like suicide may lead people to consider it as an option that if not known about wouldn't be considered). It comes down to what you are comfortable with. So just watch what you feel is appropriate.

Shows that may or may not be ok: (your discretion)

F.M.A Brotherhood - this is probably your best option if its something you already like and want to share
Fairy Tail - some fanservice / all violence is fantasy with no blood (comparable to dbz)
Love Live School Idol Project - minor fanservice
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU - almost 0 fanservice or violence
Nisekoi - some minor fanservice
Your Lie in April - really sad but absolutely no fanservice or violence
Fate/stay Night [Unlimited Blade Works] - violence/death
Death Note - lots of violence/death
Code Geass - lots of violence/death/philosophical ideology

I thought Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood was a great show. However, all 64 episodes last 1660 minutes, so it takes a long time to watch! There are a lot of other series you could watch in that time.

If you haven't already, you may want to consider:
* Your lie in April (feels, 8/10)
* Bodacious Space Pirates (pew pew, 7/10).
* Gekkan Shojo Nozaki-kun [Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun] for laughs, 10/10).

None of those titles are dark. I don't recall ecchi being an issue in any of them either.

Ok these, I've watched with my 5-year old:
Sailor Moon
Ore Monogatari
Chihayafuru
Usagi Drop

Zero trauma content, it's pretty straightforward simple stories, no mind twist or violence involved.
