Hayao Miyazaki has retired from feature film making. But before he did, there was a manga he was keen to turn into a movie, but didn’t. That manga was Parasyte.
In a recent podcast, Studio Ghibli co-founder Toshio Suzuki talked with Genki Kawamura, who produced the live-action Parasyte movies. Suzuki told him, “We were thinking about doing [an anime] of it at Ghibli.”
Somewhat surprised, Kawamura said the manga’s themes did match up with Studio Ghibli’s sensibilities. Hayao Miyazaki, in particular, apparently liked the manga. According to Suzuki, “I also really liked it... The original manga was very interesting.” The two of them moved forward with the project; however, they obviously ended up not doing the anime.

Huh, that's interesting. Ghibli made mostly family stuff. To be honest, though, Ghibli are probably good enough to do something like that right.

Was this the same "Parasyte" that was made into an anime series just recently? It would be interesting for Studio Ghibli to do a horror based anime movie. If there's a horror manga I want for SG to make what about "Uzumaki"? OK, it was made into a live action movie that wasn't half bad, but just imagine an anime version of that. And on the subject of SG making mostly family stuff, just take a look at "Princess Mononoke". It had enough violence to get a PG-13 rating in the States. By the way, its one of my favorite animated movies ever.

Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind is what probably is most similar to parasyte to me.... Though Princess Mononoke as well, as previously mentioned.

It would fail though.

The current adaptation is one of the best iterations of the manga you could ask for (though there are bits where they could have trimmed from the manga because the source material gets a little flimsy or a little long at points)

The problem with Miyazaki and Ghibli isn't that they're family oriented. It's that they're visuals over story. they could do a FANTASTIC true to book hobbit or lord of the rings series. Seriously. Tolkien is as long winded and hung up on visuals as Miyazaki is.....

But if anything, parasyte needed to be a bit tighter and have a bit more tension to it than what we got.

If there's anything I'd like to see Miyazaki or GS make a movie out of, it would have to be "Dragonflight" by Anne McCaffrey. Knowing Miyazaki's love of aviation, imagine what he could do with dragonriders fighting threadfall.

That would be interesting to see. Although Studio Ghibli have made movies not aimed for kids before such as Grave of the Fireflies.

Would they name it Super Happy Fun Fun Time Whit Parasyies?

If anyone should take parasyte onto their wing then it should've been Satoshi Kon while he still lived!
