Okay so, I always watch anime basically. As a new member of the otaku world, I just feel like I need to learn Japanese.
For some reason I can't stand having to look at the text and reading it. Yeah you're probably thinking, " why not just watch the dubbed version?" My answer to that is, I just can't! Someday I'll learn Japanese and enjoy anime without feeling like I'm communicating with aliens. What about you?

I foresee many people will call you a weeaboo. I'm sure many people do want to learn Japanese for that reason as well though.

most people don't know Japanese and just watch anime with English subtitles
having said that, watching series like Kiniro makes me want to further my knowledge in the language (which is rather poor)

At the end of this semester, I'll have taken 18 hours of Japanese class (12 of which is counted as elective credit) at my University and intend to take another 3 next semester because of anime (and VNs, manga, etc). After that, I fully intend to continue learning it.

No, not really. If I don't have a use for speaking Japanese other than watching without subtitles then I don't really have a reason to learn it. I have picked up a little, but will not say them aloud without embarrassing myself.

Yeah but I am probably still going to look at subtitles. But it's good to know more than one language, even if it is not Japanese for whatever reason it may be for learning said language.

New to Crunchy...Yes I do want to learn the dialect, but not just for Anime. I am quite smitten with the people, the land, the history, and most of the culture. I don't want to be that foreigner who thinks they know a people cause they've seen every episode of "Good Times". I would love to put the effort in. Hope I'm making sense. Thanks for the ?.

I've picked up some phrases from anime over the years, but I definitely wouldn't be able to hold a conversation. Even though I only understand a fraction of what's being said it over-all sounds really natural to my ears when I hear it. So that's been kind of cool I suppose.

Back in the day I was not a fan of subs at all, and only turned to them out of pure necessity. Now I can't go back to dubbed anime because so many are incredibly low quality. Can probably count the number of dubs I can stand to listen to now on one hand.

If I was a little younger and still doing the whole college thing I could see myself trying a Japanese class or two. But for now I'm content with not formally learning any. Could change my mind on that down the road though, so we'll see.

It did. then I actually tried and found out I didn't really want to learn that bad.

Helps to open up new neural pathways or some such i've been told when learning new things.

If you plan on ever going to Japan for any reason then it's a valid excuse to learn it. I wanted to in HS, but I lived too far away from my school for me to get to the class, since there was only 1 class first thing in the morning.

Short answer yes. But Anime isn't the reason I want to learn, it just makes me want to learn more.

I sure don't mind reading subs. People don't see the work and occasional brilliance put into it that stretches beyond mere translation.
