Okay so, I always watch anime basically. As a new member of the otaku world, I just feel like I need to learn Japanese.
For some reason I can't stand having to look at the text and reading it. Yeah you're probably thinking, " why not just watch the dubbed version?" My answer to that is, I just can't! Someday I'll learn Japanese and enjoy anime without feeling like I'm communicating with aliens. What about you?

I don't know if I'd learn Japanese just because I watch anime only because Japanese is the hardest proven language to learn if you are a native English speaker. Also, anime with subtitles or dubs are incredibly common now thanks to streaming sites. A few decades ago, I'd say learning Japanese to pursue anime would be worthwhile, but now it's largely unnecessary.

However, I do plan on entering the animation industry as a writer, so if I could learn Japanese purely as a means to study dialogue and anime on a deeper level. Furthermore, if I ever decided to move to Japan and work for their industry, then I'd definitely would need to learn it (although idk if they'd take an English writer).

For my purposes, there might be reason for me to take Japanese, but really unless you plan on moving to Japan and learn about their culture or you really want to learn a language, I don't think anime watching alone is a strong enough motivation.

Honestly I'm satisfied with reading subs and fan translations. Learn an entire language? Nope, I'm far to lazy for that too happen!

In my experience, I find it easier to be able to understand what someone is saying in a different language than trying to speak it for yourself.

For example, I can watch an anime without subtitles and get the general gist of it, just from listening for key words that I've picked up the past few years. I have no idea where to begin with reading kanji or understanding the grammar, but I can still use context clues to figure out what they're saying.

I'd recommend watching an episode of anime with subtitles, and then watch it again without them. You'd be surprised how much vocab you pick up on.

Yeah. Learning japanese would let me be able to play VNs without them being translated. Though realistically I doubt I'll ever find time to learn.

I would Love to learn Japanese and anime is definitely responsible for that desire. In my opinion, the Japanese language as a whole is much more expressive and beautiful than the English language (though that may be a bias on my part). I wish so hard I could just flip a switch and understand the meaning behind the words without glancing at the subtitles, but languages are difficult. I'm still stuck on French... You'd think with all the anime I consume in a week that I would be able to get at least the basics down. hahaha XD

Though, I feel as though mass sharing of cross-cultural media, like anime, also have somewhat of a side agenda to provoke those desires to immerse oneself further into another culture. I mean without this mass sharing of ideas we would never even think of wanting to do such a thing like learn a new language about a culture in another section of the planet.

Anime has definitely influenced me to want to learn Japanese. Of course, I do want to learn it so I can watch anime without subtitles but also because after I started watching Anime, I've become a lot more interested in the awesome things that artistic Japanese individuals create! I've gotten sucked into things like Nico Nico Video, and other Japanese pop culture related things. But because most of these things are viewed more in Japan rather than anywhere else, most of it isn't dubbed or subbed in English. It would be great to be able to enjoy these works while understanding them too.

I also happen to read a lot of doujinshi, which is also mostly Japanese. It's that terrible feeling I get when I see something amazing but I can't understand any of it that makes me really want to know the language. It would also be cool to communicate in an extra tongue, and will likely be useful to me one day in the future.

Yes. Anime has certainly sparked more interest in wanting to learn a new language.

I would like to learn Japanese, but that's more because I enjoy learning things radically different from what I know, and that's what makes learning new, non-romance languages so interesting. Sadly learning these languages is pretty time consuming so only time will tell how many languages I'll pick up. I guess watching anime makes me a bit biased in how much I want to learn Japanese though, so there's that.
