I've been working on a Top 20 Favorite Manga List for a Youtube video and I'm having trouble putting One Piece, Naruto & Bleach in a proper place.

Does anybody else have trouble when doing a Top 20 Favorite Manga list and feel weird leaving these out just because they were the series that got me into Anime & Manga.

Is it bad to rate them too high or bad to rate them too low?

Can I get some people's thoughts on the subject?

It can be difficult, if for no other reason than because they're so long (especially One Piece) that it's difficult to compare them readily to shorter works. It's not just about pacing, either. The release schedule and duration of a manga's run is worthy of consideration as well. Once you get to runs as long as the "big three" boast you start running into demographic concerns. Bleach is still ongoing, and has been going for 14 years. Naruto is done now, but ran for 15 years. One Piece is still ongoing, and has been going on for 18 years. For the sake of argument let's say that someone started reading One Piece as soon as its first volume hit the shelves in Japan, and let's say that they were only 5 when they started. They're 23 now, and the story still isn't over. A 23 year old doesn't read a story like a 5 year old does, so One Piece will have taken on a new character for that hypothetical person as they aged. And it's still not done.

I like Naruto more but I think One Piece has the better story.

It's what got me into Anime & Manga. If I forget my roots and what got me started into the whole life of manga/anime just because it's maybe not one of my favorites but at certain times they were my favorites. Is it okay that I find some series more enjoyable but don't believe they should be rated higher than OP/Naruto?

Or should I compare them to the lengths of other series such as Death Note, which are shorter but still left an impact on me.

I wanna be fair when rating them but I don't wanna be biased.

If it's a favorite manga list, then place them how you like them.
If you enjoy a series more than One Piece, place it higher than One Piece.

One Piece and Hunter x Hunter were the first manga I've ever read. I enjoy One Piece more than Hunter x Hunter, but I think in terms of writing Hunter x Hunter is a little bit better, but I still would place One Piece higher than Hunter x Hunter.
Then, 10 years or so later, I've read Gintama, which became my new new favorite. It was really hard, but I had to replace One Piece's #1 spot for favorite manga with Gintama, even though One Piece got me into manga.

So, don't think too much about it. Just place them as high as you like them at the moment.

Yeah, you're right.

But I do try not to get the "New Series Fever" where people tend to rate a series too high after just reading it.

I am at fault with One-Punch Man u.u

The "big three" are over rated. They are only so well known in the west for getting people into anime. In Japan Bleach has nose dived in popularity and Naruto last I checked was strong enough but starting to drift out of the top 10. One Piece is the only one really popular and doing super well in Japan right now and is my favorite of the "Big Three" but even then objectively speaking I'm not sure how high I'd put it.

Really I'd say leave out any of the big three if you can unless you REALLY liked any of them.

There's nothing wrong with allowing nostalgia to effect a ranking system. Positive memories surrounding series clearly impact how much we enjoy them now, even if they are less good from some objective standpoint. But as has been pointed out, the purpose of your rankings is "your favorites" not "what others might enjoy".

As for series length; yes, it can be hard to compare something that ran for hundreds of chapters with something that only ran for 50. And not just length: you have to force yourself to compare manga of different genres, different artistic styles, etc. Still, that's the challenge--and fun, I might add-- of collecting diverse manga into a single favorites list.

Yes, and if you look at my MAL profile, you'll see that neither OP, Naruto or Bleach are in my top ten favorite manga list. They're average compared to FMA, Hokuto no Ken or even GTO.

Bleach and Naruto, definitely deserve to be in the top 20.
I know it's hard to compare the newer anime to them since most of them are really short. But people discredit Bleach and Naruto because they're so popular. Objectively, the amount of effort put into the characters of Itachi, Madara, Obito and Nagato is amazing. And the art style and initial concept in Bleach is brilliant. I can't say much for One Piece since it doesn't actually have any really deep intricate characters or a plot taking it anywhere, and the art style speaks for itself. (sorry if I offended any One Piece fans) Although One Piece is funny, it's been barraged with tons of fan service like modern anime, mentioning no names *cough cough* the ones that Crunchyroll has just started licensing in the past month or so *cough cough*

Hard to do it for manga given I don't keep track of manga I finish and what not...

But going off the top of my head right now in no particular order:

Jitsu wa Watashi wa
Ore Monogatari
Magi
Vinland Saga
Barakamon
Monster Musume
Horimiya
Seitokai Yakuindomo
Yotsubato
Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou

In the past, I really enjoyed Bleach but as of now, it's not one of my favorites and I just buy the volumes as they come out, out of habit.

But to say it wasn't one of my favorites at a point would be lying and there lies the problem. Where do I rate it on an all time list?

When it was at it's peak? as it is currently? IF I judge it at it's peak, am I just ignoring the bad stuff that followed?

I know it is MY favorites list but If I rated it high, I wanna be able to give a good reason on why it's on the list. To me, it's worth being on the list just because of the past memories with it but as of now, if I rate the series as a whole, I don't know what to do.

Some pretty nice series on the list, I'm going to use "Monster Mesume" for an example.

I love Monster Mesume, I think it's one of the best harem/fanservice manga out right now, It pretty much deserves the praise people give it.

But for some reason, I think it would be a crime for me atleast to put Monster Mesume ahead of One Piece & Naruto. Do I enjoy Monster Mesume more than Bleach at the moment? Yes I do. Do I think Monster Mesume, if given over 400+ chapters would be better than Bleach? Probably not.

It's probably more nostalgia than anything. If One Piece & Naruto only had roughly 50 chapters and I compared it to Monster Mesume, I'd think I would take Monster Mesume you know?

An inherent problem with any Top Favorites list is that they inevitably change over time because our tastes change or something new comes out that we like more. Just because something was on the list before doesn't mean it'll stay on the list in the future, even if you still really like it. Don't feel bad for leaving past favorites off just because of how much you *used* to like them. How you feel *now* is more important. Maybe do an honorable mention if it really bothers you so much to leave them off the list but don't feel you like them enough currently to give them an official spot on your list. And just be honest, don't try to force out "good reasons".

If you like Monster Musume more than Bleach/Naruto/OP currently, then say so, rank it higher. Favorites lists aren't set in stone. If there's a major shake-up in ranking in the future then make a new list.
