If you watch sports, odds are you've heard a team name that makes you wonder what they were thinking. So which ones stand out as the worst of the worst?

Some that immediately come to my mind are:

Toronto Raptors: Raptors are extinct. If that weren't bad enough, the name is a reference to Jurassic Park. Lame.

Anaheim Mighty Ducks: Speaking of teams named after movies...

Charlotte Bobcats: Supposedly named after their original owner, Robert Johnson. They were literally "Bob's Cats."

Washington Wizards: I know "Bullets" may have been too sensitive, but they could have picked something a little less goofy, especially since there was already a team named the Magic.

Any teamed named the "Trojans": In the only story about the Trojans, they lose. Why would you name a team after a bunch of losers?

Any of the sports teams imo have lousy names, along with school mascots.

The reason most likely is to keep you from forgetting the team name with something catchy however stupid it might sound.

Team names are typically references to their locations' history and culture or a personal story for the founders. For example:

Louisiana has a large Catholic population and is nicknamed the Pelican State, so we have the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Baltimore, hence Baltimore Ravens.

NASA is headquartered in Houston - Houston Astros and Rockets

Washington Irving lived in New York and wrote under the Pseudonym "Dietrich Knickerbocker" - New York Knicks

The list goes on.

Canadiens, Blues, Jazz, Browns, and the list goes on.

And like I said they still sound stupid, imo.

Just because it has a history behind the name doesn't mean that the names are cool.

It's more about the gimmick of attracting people to make cash so the rich can stay rich.

I get the Utah Jazz, but why the other three?

because they all suck and its not really innovative. all these names are based off animals which is totally uncreative. same names in the high school, college, and professional level.

Some, not all are trying to get rich by overcharging you outrageous fees to watch a bunch of idiots swing a bat or throw a ball.

Then again the people that go to see them are the suckers, they pay the absurd prices for a beer and the likes so I can't put the full blame on the idiots milking the idiots lol.

There's not much innovation required in naming teams. If you try too hard, odds are the name will appear on my list in the OP. Better to keep things simple.

People who go to sporting events aren't any different from people who go to concerts and movies, or subscribe to Crunchyroll. We all have our own preferences.

that is true but at least add some flair, the jazz, blues sounds atrocious. it reminds me of music than sports team. The browns sounds pretty bad as well.

True but we aren't getting ripped off watching an anime and the profits go back to the studios to make more anime and the likes.

Concerts go to the artists performing and help them out, unlike cd/records/mp3s which a good portion of it goes to the record label and not the artist.

Movies aren't any better just on a lower scale, they charge 10 bucks for matinee prices these days on average, 5 bucks for a small popcorn and like 3-4 bucks just for a small drink, I see maybe 1-2 movies in a given year and Im not the one paying usually.

Buffalo Bills.

I just don't like it, even though it's accurate with the history.
