To answer your actual question reading a few pages before I turn off the lights can help me get my mind into a peaceful mode.

Now my actual opinion if your interested:

On the topic of Alcohol, while I do agree that it helps me fall asleep it doesn't help me sleep well.
I usually wake up just as or even more tired than when I went to sleep.

What I do when I can't sleep?
Read a couple of pages from the book at my bedside or watch a bit of TV after which sleep comes pretty fast.

Touché, sir. You could always do the Valium and alcohol cocktail. You'll get a good rest cause you'll sleep for a straight 14 hours, but then again you might not wake up at all In all seriousness though, I think putting on a movie or show I've seen about 100 times helps. If it's something I haven't watched before my curiosity is piqued and it hurts more than it helps to have the TV going. But if it's something I'm familiar with it actually helps me fall asleep, maybe because I can close my eyes and know what's going on / going to happen next.

That way I can really relax, be entertained, and not feel like I'm missing out on either.

Yeah, most of what Cenric wrote here applies to anybody.
Having a decent day rhythm and living (doing physical activities) + eating in a day time are big influences how easily you'll fall a sleep at night. If everything else fails, stretch and yawn like you would be getting sleepy. That works for me every time.

Good night i suppose.

Hmmm when I can't sleep absolutely nothing will make me sleep so the best thing I do is accept the fact that I can't sleep and say to myself that I will have a shitty day tomorrow but I will feel good at the end of that day because I will be so tired that I will be able to sleep, finally!

In other words, suffer a little bit the first night hehe....sorry, I am not helping much.

Yeah, you have to be careful with the moat or you wake up with wet sheets.

Watch your least favorite show or anime... .I am an insomniac as well and the only way I get good long sleep is by overexerting myself. At one point I was walking and running like 10 miles daily and was always able to get good sleep. The thing that I hate the most is when nothing works and I resign myself to staying awake, I suddenly feel tired an hour or less before I have to be up

Watch something boring on tv, drink some hot tea, study Japanese (tires me out so much), read a boring book, etc. If all else fails, take a sleep aid.

Turn the light off, lay in bed and play random games on my phone.
Mind games work the best cause that shit puts me to sleep in no time ~

or just go into my sisters room and tell her how ratchet she is..
Makes me happy and I'll fall asleep in no time also. Love ~
