Not an actual desk....but oh well.

So, I've been watching Comical Psychosomatic Medicine, and I thought I'd open up this thread for those interested in the field of Psychology to discuss or ask questions about it. Plus, as an aspiring Psych major myself, a lot of this will be a good review. Two birds, one stone.

For starters, the field of Psychology isn't limited to Abnormal Psychology, which is mental disorders. There are quite a few, with Childhood Development and Social Psychology being just two others. Personally, however, my field is Abnormal Psychology. This is what the focus of the anime is about, and probably what most people think of when someone mentions Psychology.

Abnormal Psychology is the field of clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, as well as anyone (qualified to do so) who offers help and therapy to those suffering from mental illnesses.

So, fire away. I'll answer to the best of my abilities, as I hope others in the field who frequent these forums will.

As what should be an unnecessary disclaimer, but one I'll put up regardless, please do not rely on the internet or any of this as a substitute for professional help. If you believe you are suffering from a mental illness, please seek help from a qualified professional such as a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist. This thread is only for satisfying curiosity in the field.

Been studying psychology at NAIT for 1 year now. It's really fun and everything is extremely engaging to me.
But the only thing that sucks is that where I live, there are no position for psychologists...

I don't know about yours, but my bartenders are always... professional.

So anyway, a general question regarding mental hospitals.. Think they should make a comeback in some form? Or, in your opinion, is there a better way to ensure that those with dangerous psychological disorders (paranoid schizophrenia, for example) actually stay on their meds, i.e. prison, mandatory check-ins, etc.

Or, alternatively, do you believe society has no right to force individuals diagnosed with a psychological disorder (even a dangerous one) to take medication?

Mental hospitals do still exist and are still in use, albeit perhaps not as much as they should. In the case of patients with psychosis (disconnection with reality), they aren't really in a right enough mind to made informed decisions, and any action taken should be done after consulting any guardian they might have, such as parents or spouses.

On the topic of schizophrenia, they aren't so much of a danger to others than they are themselves. The majority of schizophrenics experience auditory hallucinations, which would be voices, but only a very small percent of a percent experience command hallucinations. A command hallucination would be the voice telling them to do something, and in some cases this command isn't explicitly harmful to others. One notable Schizophrenic who has videos about him on Youtube, Gerald, experiences command hallucinations. The ones he has been reported having, however, aren't harming others but rather the voices tell him to run away from the mental institution he is being treated in. Another might be to not take medicine. Neither of these commands necessarily imply violent actions upon others.

For the majority, these voices don't tell them to hurt others. They belittle them, they damage their self-esteem, and they mentally hurt the patient instead of commanding them to hurt others. The fact of the matter is that very few schizophrenics are dangerous to people other than themselves.

There are disorders which might necessitate prison, but schizophrenia isn't one. Antisocial Personality Disorder might, at least until the age of forty which is when there is a decrease in aggressive behavior. This is mostly because people with ASD show no improvement in therapy, and often just grow worse. They also participate in illegal behaviors, with the milder forms running scams and the most severe actually killing people, which prompts the majority to find their way into prison one way or another.

I somehow knew this was a Phersu thread just by looking at the title. Am I becoming psychic? Or am I just psycho? Can I really see the future or am I imagining it? I don't know what's going on. Help me, Dr. Phersu!

Abnormal Psych is the most interesting, but we don't get much into it in AP Psych since its not really tested. Are you up-to-date with the DSM-V and the things they added/taken out. currently I just watched the video on the Ferguson(I think that is how you spell his name) experiment.

Abnormal is alright.... My concentration is personality and social but I currently do research for a cognitive neuroscience lab and clinical for Columbia... Lmao

Anyway you're not a professional at all and you don't even have your BA so this entire thread is.. interesting and silly? You said aspiring also so why are you running an AMA and playing psychologist? And already deciding your concentration without (I'm assuming) taking a proper course on it? Hahaha
