Fan Service a deal breaker?

So have friends that ignorantly told me this Kill la Kill was terrible because of the fan service... But come to find out it's sooo good. Sure the fan service in some our favorite anime can be... um over used, but that doesn't necessarily make the anime. After you get past all the panty shots and so many boobs, there usually is a marvelous story to be told. And characters to fall for every time you watch, making you crave more. What are your thoughts of fan service in anime/manga? Is it a deal breaker, or do you just get over it and reader into the finer print? :3

This is basically reliant on if it's horrible or good fan service. If it's done way too much and horribly. It ruins the anime for me.

Yep. I used to watch Fairy tail, but then when I saw the amount of fan service I stopped. Not only did the story suck, the amount of fan service was disgusting. It was taking itself to seriously and didn't care what the fans wanted as long as it sold well.

Fuck you FT you piece of fucking shit

In general, I agree with the OP: fan-service doesn't make or break a show, but if the show is otherwise good then I usually don't care. (Although the objectification of women that often accompanies it does make me squirm a bit.)

That being said, there was one show I stopped watching because of the fan-service: Freezing. Or, perhaps more to the point, I was completely turned off by the integration of fan-service and violence. The violence wasn't simply "absurdly ripping clothes off in the middle of a fight so that we can watch naked girls running around" (as in Sekerie or High School DxD)--I can handle that. But in Freezing the violence was itself sexualized: from the rape attempt early in the first season, to the constant "look boobs! Ooo, she just got dismembered! Look, dismembered girl's boobs!" that seemed to characterize most of the fight scenes.

So perhaps that's the exception that proves the rule. I don't mind fan-service by itself; I mind when the fan-service becomes an outlet to encourage rape or sadism.

In some cases, yes.

I dropped Food Wars for that reason. I started it expecting that it would be a show about cooking with some fanservice, but then it turned out it was basically a Ecchi show with a cooking theme.

What's a deal breaker for me is when a show tries to be sexy and serious at the same time. Kill la Kill never really aimed for that. Yea, the show had some serious moments, but the fan service in that show literally made fun of itself to the point where I forgot that there was borderline naked guys, and girls there, and I was more focused on what was going on in the story, and the surroundings.

This also might just be me, but the art style from Kill la Kill didn't even support what people hated the most about the show. Not every scene in Kill la kill was "LOOK WE'RE SHOWING YOU UNDERBOOB" followed by wasted money going into making the pair of boobs look way better than the rest of the show. It was just there. Hell, It wasn't even one sided. I cant even remember how many times that teacher was stripping in every scene he was in.

Then again, It could just be that The only reason I liked the show is because it's Trigger , and they made Gurren Lagann, so they're forgiven (Kinda like how most people are right now with Ninja Slayer).

Normally a show heavy with fan service has a less than spectacular story But two shows made me look deeper into the Ecchi shows: High School DxD and Cat Planet Cuties (CPC). In CPC I found the fan service to be overstated. (But the OVA is nothing but fan service. DxD is very ecchi, but the actual story is actually very, very good. But the English dub sucks since the girls writing it tried to hard to make it edgy ecchi. So not a deal brealer if the show otherwise has good points.

Fan service will ruin any series for me unless studio Shaft is animating it.

I'm going to agree with Ononoki on this one.

A thread about fanservice? Is it Wednesday already? There is a search box in your top right corner, I'd recommend using it before you start a thread.

I don't see the need to state my opinion on the matter again, since I have done so plenty of times in different threads. I do however find it hilarious that Kill la Kill gets brought up whenever people talk about how fanservice. Bad example, back to your corner!
