I could really care less about the amount of fanservice that there is in an anime. I've never seen any fanservice that you would really call "bad".

I've yet to meet the fan service which proved a deal breaker for me, but I admit to the possibility I might one day do so.

My point exactly... As long as their not trying too hard to make it seem forced all the time, it's fine. Kill la Kill was basically a bad joke told in such a hilarious fashion that you just didn't care. But I really don't base anime on fans service. As long as the character development and story flow right, then hell let them camera angle those under boobs as much as they like xD

I will refrain from posting such atrocities on the forums. I am on the ban radar.

In some cases, yes.

I dropped Food Wars for that reason. I started it expecting that it would be a show about cooking with some fanservice, but then it turned out it was basically a Ecchi show with a cooking theme.

Also gonna chime in with you misjudged this one. It's largely the former.

I hope manga/anime creators pay attention to threads like this. They will see that most people don't care about the fan service as long as the writing is good. Personally I don't give points for fan service, but I also don't take points away for it.

The problem I have is that many anime these days are garbage that they try to market by putting in fan service because the writing is so bad. I can't think of any specific names because I stop watching them two episodes in. They are becoming too reliant on fan service to sell anime.

I get that they market most of that stuff towards teenage boys, but I wish more adults were into anime so we could get more of the good anime.

I have come to notice that it depends on how the fan service is handled.

ToLoveRu Darkness and especially Prison School are VERY creative about their fanservice. They don't just throw out scantly clad women with big tits and white goo all over the place. They turn the portrayal of fan service into an art. Neither of them really have a grandiose plot either. TLRD's plot is about an alien princess trying to force a timid Japanese teenager to establish a harem. Prison School is 5 boys who go to a school made up entirely of girls aside from them trying to avoid expulsion so they can participate in a Wet T-shirt contest. In case you forgot the plot to Prison School, because I know I did for a good 100 chapters, THAT IS IT!

On the other hand you have Testament of a Shitty Anime which actually tries to have a serious and gripping plot, but spends 90% of the run showing half naked girls rubbing up against a guy. Now that my friends, is just laziness. Especially since in the author's previous work, Hagure Yuusha, the fanservice was hilariously creative. The main character used acupuncture to cause 2 girls to wet themselves just so the third one wouldn't have to be embarrassed.

If you are going to write a serious story, write a friggin serious story. Don't write a serious story littered with crappy porn. If you wanna write porn, then write good porn.

Too much fan service is a killer. Especially in a harem with no point. I'm starting to dislike how harem men are the same character with a different look and it's almost insulting, especially when the series ends and not a single women out of the 10 is chosen as the main girl. I think if you're going to put in money and time, switch up the anime genre stereotypes and make things more mature as opposed to having it be pointless comedy. Make everything from scenes to music to story as important as a film's and there you have a quality anime.

Not only are they the same character... This guy has been type cast as them.

Pick a harem from this season or last season out of a hat. There is a 90% chance he has voiced the protagonist of that.

If there is lolli fan service I immediately put the show in the no-go folder. I'm not a fan of the hypersexualization of high school age girls in anime, but I can stand it if the plot is good. There is no real excuse for lolli in my opinion.

It's not automatically a deal breaker, but it does more often than not serve as a mark against it.

I've watched some shows that are pretty heavy on the fanservice though - almost to disturbing levels. However, I was very interested in the shows themselves. Conversely, i've dropped other shows because of fanservice that were actually far tamer.

So I don't think it's a deal breaker for me as much as it's usually "the straw that breaks the camels back", if that makes any sense.
