I work out, but reject the "gains" lifestyle. I don't track my progress, and I don't intend to significantly alter my diet for the sake of getting in shape. I work out largely because I don't want to change my diet much: my eating habits and sedentary lifestyle have led to gout. Something had to give, and I'm not giving up tasty food. I have a bunch of friends who also work out, so it's a social experience for me as much as a self-improvement one.

You do realize you can still go out and eat tons of horrible food and still get "gains" right?

Yes sir. Gains is love. Gains is life.

Edit: On a more serious note, I take my weightlifting seriously. I play uni football in the Offensive line position and that position demands a lot, physical wise (as well as mentally). I'm in my off-season right now so I train from somewhere to 4 - 5x a week for about 2 - 2 1/2 hours. And I need to eat a lot, around 3.5 - 4k cal, to maintain my muscle mass and my overall weight, 315 lbs of lean muscle, with a bit of body fat. I've lifted for about 5 years give or take, but it was really casual for the first 3 years. After lifting seriously after the 4th year, my gains and body weight have skyrocketed. I was around 280-285 lbs before I started. I could care less about my aesthetics (which don't look too bad tbh), all I want is to be strong af.

I do, but my point is that "gains" aren't too important to me, as long as I avoid "losses". If I avoid gout attacks doing what I'm doing, then I'll keep doing it. If I still get gout attacks, I'll step it up and re-evaluate. The goal when I go to the gym is to tire myself out exercising, because that's my body telling me that it's working. That's all there is to it. I will adjust weights/speeds accordingly to meet that goal efficiently, and think no more of it.

I've lifted regularly 1-3 times a week for 6 years (Almost always 2 only 1 when i'm hurt or something and can't squat and 3 if I feel like it) but i'm definitely not about the "gains". I lift purely to maintain muscle mass and stay healthy and don't really desire to be much bigger or stronger than I am so I don't change my routine (unless I get bored or just want to try something for fun). You have eat way too much if you really want to bulk and its super annoying and expensive (I already have a higher calorie requirement than the average male my age from the little muscle mass I maintain).
