Typed in google and here it is:

American football is called football because of its origin. Its like soccer, can be traced back to rugby football where you use your feet to kick a ball at a goal or successfully carry a ball over a goal line

Still sounds pretty dumb though

Hmm I always thought that it was called football because the ball is a foot long from point to point. But Hairbelly's explanation seems to put that belief to rest.

Because we're Americans. We like stealing things and making them our own, even when they make no sense.

Nope it was deliberate. That's why some birds have unique American names. The Canada Jay has a different name in Audubon.

edit: IIRC it's the Gray Jay just to really be a splitter.

PGW has taught me something today. Thank you!

We're morons whom every other nation holds some contempt toward, it seems.
I personally hate American football, though, as someone from America. Boring as hell, don't understand the adoration for it.
Soccer is 100 times more interesting.

So we use what we call a soccer ball to play soccer, a tennis ball to play tennis, and a football ball to play football.

So what do other countries call the ball that we call a soccer ball then?
