No idea how it started. I think it is only fair to use a home court rule, when I am home in the states I call it football, when I am abroad then I say American Football. Happy?

The football being a foot long is a myth. The standard football is 11 inches. It's close, but that was never the origin of the name anyway. The name originated from a whole branch of games originally called football, including soccer, rugby, and gridiron football.

The original name to all of those games had nothing to do with the part of the body you used to move the ball. It was to indicate it was a game played on foot. This was to differentiate it from the popular sports among aristocrats and the wealthy which were generally played on horseback such as Polo (which yes, is older than the entire football family tree.)

We did it, because we knew it would piss you off.

This is what I think:

Americans should call it American Football, and call soccer just Football.

That's rather pointless. I can understand saying American Football when you're on the Internet or such, but if you think about how many words are spelled or used differently in different places, you'll soon realize how pointless trying to change the way people speak is. It's always just been 'football' for most of us, and nothing will probably ever change that.

But each region to their own language, am I right? Other countries can question us, but we can question them too, and it all has the same answer; "Because we can; it's our tongue, not yours."

This.

So Much this.

Spin off from rubgy football

wish they'd use the actual name of the sport, though.

Which is gridiron.

I have no idea, but you can't really steal a word. There is American English and United Kingdom English, some words are spelled differently aswell. Like in America it is spelled Armor, and in the UK it is spelled Armour.

Because our Patriots like Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Adams, Dickinson, Shipley, Paca, Madison, and Woodhull, after overthrowing the cruel King of England made up a sport and said screw the Brits, this is football not their kicking a ball around on the ground. We made crisps and called them chips, THEN we made actual chips and called those French Fries! We built flats and called them apartments, we did all this to spit in the face of our cruel British oppressors. Down with the King and we never looked back. Why would we go to such lengths to do this you ask? Because now every time someone discusses football, people will say wait do you mean American football? or futbol?! It was to remind the world that America is the land of the free and the home of the brave!
