So from time to time I've seen a post that I've wanted to acknowledge as truth or cleverness but haven't had enough new to say to justify a quote. (that hasn't always stopped me, I've done a few QFTs)

Wouldn't it be nice if we could give someone a thumbs up for a post?

OR

would that lead to more drama?

Not my sort of thing, most of the reason why I dislike Reddit so much.

"You said something I don't like DISLIKE THIS POST"

It's a button of objectivity. Makes no sense. The mods remove anything not suitable, so the argument that it would help keep "unwanted posts" out is moot.

I dont know if that would work in a forum type situation like this. The point of likes on youtube and reddit are to push the quality posts up to the top but its at the cost of destroying long term discussion. Then again we do have the like/dislike buttons at the bottom.

Well, there are these little "Thumbs Up/Down" at the bottom of each post that you can click on (red box):

But they don't actually display a +1 or -1 on the post itself. But you could use those.

D'oh... but if the author of the post doesn't know. what's the point?

I don't think it's such a good idea. Well, I wouldn't like it. Some people would just dislike all posts of a person they don't like (there's people like that, yeah...) and I find that stupid. The +x and -x annoy me for some reason, too.

Yeah, I agree. The feature is in place, but it's a tad illogical that way it's currently set up since the author doesn't visually receive any feedback. It maybe be more useful to the Moderators... I believe there's a thread on somewhere...

I would say that if CR decided to add a more modern post voting system to the forum (like what they have for show episodes), that CR should only deploy a "thumbs up" and not a "thumbs down" since that can lead to ganging up and burying useful posts. People seem to hold petty grudges that can lead to trashing valid comments which happens quite often on places like Reddit.

I like the idea of being able to tell that you've been thumbs upped (which the current rate up/down on posts doesn't provide). Who doesn't like to see "hey they like me!" It's also nice for folks who don't want to just spam "me too" or "I agree" posts all over the place, but don't have a lot more to say (or don't have the time/energy to say it).

I dislike very much being able to "dislike" or "thumbs down" something in a way that is visible; I hate how this works in comments where with enough downvotes a person's comment becomes hidden, and often it's just because they said they didn't like a show.

(Currently the way the rate up/down in forum posts works is all behind-the-scenes, and simply results in an automatic report to moderators if a post accumulates too many down points.

I don't really like the idea. The forums already seem like a big popularity contest already and I really don't see a point in continuing it. Egos here are big enough already.

If it was decided to have some sort of +/- system for forum posts I would prefer it if nobody could see the it except the person who received the thumbs up or thumbs down. That way they see their post was acknowledged, and who acknowledged it, without it becoming anything more than that. I would also have to say that in that system only +1s should really exist since I really don't care who disagrees with me if they aren't going to bother responding.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Its already in place and currently used on the comments in the videos. Worst case scenario someone thumbs down, but you can only thumb down/up once so sure why not. If so many dislikes the comment gets buried so it's not visible unless you click it to show, otherwise whats the point of having a thumbs up/down just sitting there?

Makes sense to me and is what I personally would desire.
