i guess it depends on the situation i find it in. if i'm just browsing an anime or manga viewing site like crunchyroll, i first look at the title and cover art, then read the summary. if i'm still interested after that, i try watching an episode or reading a chapter.

for youtube, i sometimes watch top anime openings/endings or multi anime openings, and if i like what i see, i look the series up. that's how i was pulled into higurashi no naku koro ni and your lie in april.

another way i get pulled in is by watching anime watchers review a series and give it a good rating. this mostly refers to GRArkada. i watched a few of his reviews for shows that i had watched already and agreed with a lot of the things he said, so i watched some of the reviews he made for shows i hadn't watched yet and got some new favorites that way.

once i get pulled in enough to watch an episode, the story is the main reason i stay, with animation and music (both opening/ending and background) playing a huge roll in my enjoyment as well.

Animation definitely plays a role, as I find I tend to burn through older anime more slowly, even if it has a top level story.

If the story is not good, I usually stop at around ep 3. Sometimes before ep 3 I feel its a rehash of something I've watched before. Of if its just plain bad.

A nice cover might catch my eye and make me wanna check it out for sure, but it still comes down to how much I like it. All things considered.

Lastly, genere is mostly unimportant unless it leans heavily on moe/loli. Ecchi needs to be usued tactfully and not as a means to the end. Shoujo is fine, but it needs to be funny for me to "shamelessly" watch it, lol.

For me it'll be an interesting character or a show that just has this amazing story and flow that pulls you in, but a good opening helps! Also if the animation is gorgeous that can get me into an anime

the art style and storyline are really key points for me. i prefer illustrations closer to reality. oversized character body proportions and huge bug eyes are a huge turn off.

A good art style is a plus..

I prefer less "moe" art styles since I am a big fan of anime from the 80's and early 90's.

However, even a wonderful art style cannot make up for a shitty story.

A good art style pulls me in, however a good plot and story makes me stay.

The artwork and the story line are a must for me.

Though sometimes it just has to be interesting to keep me in.

The setting and art/animation...
If I don't like the setting then I have a hard time watching it...
And if they animations are plain ugly then NOPE, I'm out lol
I do have some exceptions though lol

The story line and the art style. Sometimes the art style really bugs me like xxHolic.

Presentation, how interesting the characters are, artwork with both environment and character, the mood of the setting and music , how the pacing is, how many episodes, is is drug out and is it dull, is it repetitive or does it keep fresh and interesting. Overall it all has to come together neatly.
