Can you imagine going through the entire 80's--no, I imagine most here probably can't --where we knew absolutely nothing about Japan except that it was the subject of racist and boom-economy resentful jokes (and Michael Crichton novels), and badly lip-synched reruns of Robotech, Star Blazers and Voltron were, for most in the mainstream, a humorless cheapjack-looking pestilence of afternoon television...

...And then, at the laserdisk room of a comic or gaming con, seeing the original Dirty Pair for the first time?
("Holy crap, they've got a sense of humor! I actually like these two!")

First of all, they aren't necessarily my fav anime, but the ones that left a huge impact on me!
Evangelion // The End of Evangelion
Grave of the Fireflies
Clannad
Gintama
Madoka Magica
One Piece (Because it made me watch the whole show in about 2 months lol)
Naruto (Because.. well, it's because of Naruto that I got hooked into anime, again - I used to watch in my childhood -)
There may be more, but these are the first ones that I can remember

Welcome to the NHK
It actually cheered me up when I felt I was at my lowest. Even though the MC was almost absolutely hopeless, there was someone even more hopeless who wanted to make him someone useful. I almost cried when it was over.

Cowboy Bebop - Watching Spike return to reunite with Julia only to have her taken from him and then his bloody confrontation with Vicious. It makes you think about life and how no matter what happens you have to face the music. Despite the outcome you feel better having done it regardless of the outcome

Free!.

I'm such a huge fan of this anime, it has left me with so much inspirations. And like every night at 2AM (the time it aired in Australia from CR), I would stay awake to watch each episode.

I love the writing, and I love the ideas presented in this anime. Sure, you can find friendship anime everywhere, but this one is special to me... because the message is strongest (and it's not set in fantasy worlds, it's set in real world with real issues/dialogues).

It's like, "True friends can have big arguments that set them apart from time to time, but they will always come back together"

It's got to be Clannad: After Story for me. I sat there for a good 10 minutes just letting what I'd seen sink in unsure of what exactly I should do next. It was pretty much a case of 'Well, that happened'. I mean, it didn't change my outlook or anything, but I was so pleasantly surprised that I managed to get so much enjoyment out of a show I kept putting off because I didn't like the art style at first.

Impacted my views on something most profoundly- Now and Then Here and There. It is one of the most powerful anti-war films I've ever seen, even compared to live action.

Made me think about identity- Hourou Musuko Wandering Son. At the end he says "This is the way I am" ... sill can't get it out of my head.

Gave me the most existential thoughts- Mushi-shi.

Not sure why, but "Please Save My Earth". I haven't seen it since college though, and it probably won't live up to my memories.
