I'm a social worker, so empathy is something I have to use constantly. Not to say that I get it perfect all the time, but it's essential to do the job effectively.

Truth be told I think you're asking this question in the wrong place.

What do you think? Have you ever had these strange sensations? Do you believe this is an important trait that everyone should have or a weakness that nobody should bother to cultivate?

Empathy is important to have in your personal relationships as well as with other people. The problem we are seeing is that people can't distinguish between empathy and sympathy. Sympathy is toxic to relationships and social issues. It does not help people like the result of sorting out you feelings of empathy.

Sympathy will target one person or group and try to make the supposed pain go away by giving metaphorically handing them a blanky. Empathy allows you to understand some if not all of what others experience by putting yourself in their position. But it does not result in giving. The other part of empathy that people miss is that those who are truly empathetic consider all people, not just the victim group sympathy will focus on.
