Why are all of my comments disabled? Is this happening for everyone or just me?

Im guessing it's something to do with the new CSS they're doing on the site.

Idk if I should write this on here, but if I had to guess they're most likely updating the commenting software. I wrote them a while back (feels almost like 6 months actually) about bugs in their commenting software (exclusive to the video comments, not on the forum) that allowed people to delete any comment, pin and unpin spoiler alerts of any comment, and like/unlike any comment as many times as you'd want.

If someone wished to be malicious, it would take someone experienced minutes to write code to use this. They quickly fixed it so you couldn't delete other people comments but they left the spoiler and likes open. (The delete would have been most malicous, as a simple loop could've deleted every single comment ever made.)

As for the DDOS, I find that very unlikely as posting comments, making them spoilers, and like/disliking could hardly use enough bandwidth to slow down crunchyroll a video streaming service.

Back to the theory that they're updating the software, when I was reading the code (client-side obviously) for commenting I found this comment on several unused functions - "//Note: some of these functions are untested. need to convert some more views to jquery before we can test."

Judging from the functions and what I remember to have been there, looks like eventually we can expect emojis (same ones as on the forum), maybe captchas (never seen a captcha personally but is placed on the page if the server deems it necessary apparently), and the ability to delete just your comment or your comment and the children. (Of course, you'll be able to revive both your comment and the children as well if you choose.)

Lastly, to the mods/crunchyroll, I apologize in advance if I'm posting any information that you do not want available. I post this only with the intent to provide an explanation which is at best a guess. I also would wish to note that while reading the code, I did not make any "attempt to decipher, decompile, disassemble or reverse engineer any of the software used to provide the Site or Services" If I have misunderstood the Terms of Service, please contact me.

No need for more of these threads... CR can simply switch off the comments anytime while they resolve issues. That's probably what they're doing.

Just so people of the NON technical persuasion can understand. The comments normally get turned off due to a Hack, DDos, or server overload/bottleneck of system resources. The last one is the most probable for being the reason is for this outage. By turning them off they can dedicate more server hardware resources to the main objective of streaming anime to everyone. With all the advertising they have been doing as of late they forgot to upgrade the server cluster to support the massive amount of new customers and to prevent the whole site from crashing they turn off resource intensive processes. Believe me when i say that comments are VERY resource intensive so is usually the first option to get turned off until a upgrade in hardware and/or software is put into place.

So enjoy the anime and make a comment thread here about it to post your comments for now as the forums ARE on a different server cluster using a much simpler code. Have a great week all.

It's more like their comment software was super vulnerable and they were like, OH SHIT we have to disable comments so we can fix this without damage.
