let's not forget Emi's fight club show, which is fun to watch (and if you're in Japan, you can sometimes participate by answering questions related to Love Live w/ your remote)

I can't explain it really well, apologies if I sound vague.

A lot of it is; it is cute. It is indeed cute girls doing cute thing but I felt they're not just cute. The characters and bond together feels really sincere and thus their interaction with each other is great and makes you actually care about that. It is relatable in that sense. I saw a group of friends working hard for an objective and I wanted them to succeed in that, but more importantly I wanted them to succeed as friends. It is an anime about idols, obviously, but after I finished the show I didn't feel like that was THE major theme in the show, I think the major theme is friendship. And that aspect in the show felt really genuine, nice and heartwarming.

I think this is the first reason which makes me want to watch the show. I don't really care about cute girls being cute...

I won't deny it, Windy. But it's less craven than other shows of the same type (IMO).

If it is pandering then for the most part it is doing it in the purest, most innocent way. Other than Nozomi's washi washi, there is nothing. No panchira, no crotch falling, very little onsen action. It is showing on Disney Channel in Japan! It is not just for otaku!

It is mainstream. Women, not just girls, love it. Nico Nico just rebroadcast S1 and S2 this weekend, 6 hours in a row for each. S2 had 281,000 viewers for the second marathon rebroadcast. The first marathon had over 513000 viewers.

I know you guys think you know otaku but... this is not just an otaku show. It has very broad appeal in Japan. It makes billions and billions of yen on the discs, the music, concerts, the mobile game. The Japan game as 10 million accounts and well over 1 million active players. It goes way, way, way beyond otaku entertainment.

Think what you want but this is actually about as far from an otaku pandering show as you can get.

Idol shows are just a very very dark thing to me.

Although I'll trust you that I'm missing the market.

Agreed here, too. I'll defer to Pulley's knowledge on this one.

(At the least, though, the show, mainstream or not, does have plenty of otaku fans.)

Isn't that where anime kind of is right now in Japan?

Just because the other merchandising and products are mainstream doesn't mean the show is also.

Did some quick research;

First of all, this year a Baseball game got a 51 share in Japan - ie 51% of available viewers were waching the game.

High viewership in the US is 20/20 with an 11-share (which is shocking to me)
Game of thrones has a 3.4, by comparison.

My research isn't clear, but presuming Japan measures share the same way as the US, anime actually does pretty good just not the anime we're used to seeing on CR;

Japan has 50M household TV's- The highest rated cartoon, Sazae-san seems to get a 15-17 share, so 7.5M viewers (feel free to check my math.

The niconico marathons don't relate to TV viewership directly, so I can't compare those numbers, but from nothing I can see is Love Live charting that well. Things like Curious George and Shaun the Sheep seem to get consistently higher ratings (and occasionally break the top-10 animated).

So, it's probably not that popular except in context of shows that actually get imported to our streamers (most popular that we get are 'conan' and 'one piece', altho that ultimate otaku teacher is apparently getting weirdly good ratings, might have to give it another shot)
