Just because the other merchandising and products are mainstream doesn't mean the show is also.

Did some quick research;

First of all, this year a Baseball game got a 51 share in Japan - ie 51% of available viewers were waching the game.

High viewership in the US is 20/20 with an 11-share (which is shocking to me)
Game of thrones has a 3.4, by comparison.

My research isn't clear, but presuming Japan measures share the same way as the US, anime actually does pretty good just not the anime we're used to seeing on CR;

Japan has 50M household TV's- The highest rated cartoon, Sazae-san seems to get a 15-17 share, so 7.5M viewers (feel free to check my math.

The niconico marathons don't relate to TV viewership directly, so I can't compare those numbers, but from nothing I can see is Love Live charting that well. Things like Curious George and Shaun the Sheep seem to get consistently higher ratings (and occasionally break the top-10 animated).

So, it's probably not that popular except in context of shows that actually get imported to our streamers (most popular that we get are 'conan' and 'one piece', altho that ultimate otaku teacher is apparently getting weirdly good ratings, might have to give it another shot)

it's like you never watched the show and only judged the series based on the character designs alone, which are cute. But a cute design alone doesn't make an anime "otaku pandering material". Your biased opinion against idol shows doesn't justify labeling it as such, either. It was explained to you that Love Live appeals to a broad audience, which is very true. Here's a short from a live broadcast. Starting at 3:40, you can see see

Here's an excerpt, with a translation (some leeway)

not to mention the videos on youtube of girls showing off their Love Live collection.

now, are there more males than female fans. probably, but the point is, the series also appeal to girls, not just guys.

(spoilered my bit to keep the quote tree down)

Except your reply doesn't match the post you're quoting. Admittedly my search wasn't *super* deep, but there's no sign that the show is particularly popular outside of anime culture.

It's fine that you like it, it's fine that I don't like it. The numbers i found simply don't imply it's that popular.

-- And again that's fine, the great show that doesn't make mainstream is a classic thing... but there's still no evidence that THE SHOW popular outside of anime fans.

"it's not that popular b/c people not into anime are not into Love Live"... i loled.

that goes for any anime. it's pretty clear that the OT meant among that it's popular among those who enjoy anime,
which is evident if you look at the BD / cd sales. It outsold most other anime series.

It's basically K-On but with idols.
I liked K-On a lot. I liked Love Live quite a bit too. But not to the obessive point as many :P
It was cute, fun to watch. I usually don't like idol anime, but this one was nice.
Didn't like the songs though. their performances was fun though.

Moe is the big thing these days, unfortunatly. (Except when it's lolis XD)

Nozomi is the hype of LoveLive..... No, she's not. I made that up. I do love Nozomi. Anyway, it's a good idol story with excellent music. I personally like their songs better than the recent songs from that certain countrywide idol army.

The popularity shows overseas too. The movie will be screening worldwide, the NA Premium Edition set sold out on both its first and second reprint, the mobile game was translated, etc.
However other series like [email protected] have their own popularity boosts as well.

Ultimate Otaku Teacher isn't bad. It's like Great Teacher Onizuka, except with otaku problems and a harem. I've read the manga. Honestly though... I like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei a lot better

Actually, what you're not taking into account by separating tv ratings from merchandise is the fact that DVD/BLU/Cinema Ticket sales are in fact to do with the show itself not just merchandise popularity. The fact that both DVD and Bluray more often than not top the Oricon sales charts in Japan by a LARGE margin over the competition (as high as 70-80,000 Blu-ray copies per volume sold while most anime) shows score under 20,000.

Even the movie on just 121 screens sold 252,000 tickets (4 Million Dollars) in just 2 days. Compare this to the fact that Frozen opened for 9.8 million dollars over 3 days (setting an all-time Animated Disney Record in Japan). The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug which was classified as the biggest live-action weekend of the year only scored 3 million dollars. The articles are linked below.

Their songs are better than most idol groups I've listened to (and I've listened to a lot of them becase I had an idol addiction some years ago).

If you're referring to the anime, it is really good.

I ended up liking it cause it was a good simple story with characters that draw you in.
