One of the human behaviors I understand the least is hugging.. Why do people like to be hugged without any sexuality involved. Personally, hugging is very awkward and uncomfortable.

For me, hugging is a sexual thing that I do with a girl. Hugging is like foreplay for me, and that's how I think of it.

Now non-sexual hugging is what I don't understand well... I know hugging can be a greeting, and that's different. If hugging is a greeting that's part of a culture then I understand since it's how people were raised. I'm talking about hugging in terms of emotions.
Like hugging to express excitement or affection, like this

What gives people the desire to wrap there arms around someone they like. What scientifically drives that part of human instict. If the affection isn't sexual, then why do humans feel the need to express their platonic feelings through physical interaction. I personally, just can't see the enjoyment of hugging someone I am not attracted to.

Another reason people hug is when they're sad, like this

Personally, I can't understand this at all. I have given sad people hugs to cheer them up, but I hated it everytime. It feels awkward, uncomfortable, and I just want the whole ordeal to end. And when I'm sad, the last thing I want is someone touching me. When I get sad, I go to my room and express my emotions alone. I can't understand why someone would want to embrace their bodies together during such a time which I would normally be embarrassed by.

jeez.. hugs man, how do they work

I now supposedly worship AiYumega, so I have to agree with him.

Don't do drugs, stay in school, and hug everyone and try not to get arrested while doing it!

Hugs are about intimacy. It's a bodily way to communicate that you trust that person, and that you're opening your heart to them. That's why, when you're sad, you want to be held and hugged, because both are physical signs of love: that person hugging you (in that context) is equivalent to them saying, "I care about you, and I want you to know that you can rest with me." You responding to that by hugging back and resting in their embrace is your response of trust, letting them share in your burden for a while. That's also why you hug someone you love: you want to let them know that your heart is where they can rest, and you want to rest in their heart.

The awkwardness in that case stems from your physical expression not matching your actual intention. If you aren't opening yourself to that person, then a hug is a lie: that's why it feels wrong and awkward. But if you did decide to open yourself to them and trust them, it wouldn't be awkward: it would be a kind of intimacy. One that could range from simple friendship to brotherly/sisterly affection to romantic love to selfless charity.

It's one thing if your relationship is one where you've never hugged and it'd be awkward. I can't hug my guy friends like that. It's just awkward, unless they're going through a really rough time and need a brother to support them. Then there's a brotherly kind of hug that we do. But if there's no one you can trust enough to hug, then that might indicate a lack of intimacy in your life. Which is not good.
