If you want to make it hurt, that is a good choice.

My favorite swords are generally buster or executioner/guillotine swords (not sure what the proper name for them is but like Cloud's, Kissame's or Zabuza's swords)
I like them mainly because they have the look or are broad like a shield despite not being one. aside from that not sure they just kinda speak to me better then other swords.

My two favorite types of swords have to be the katana and the gladius.

I just finished watching Buffy the Vampire slayer and I Love her scythe at the end!

Maybe not my top fave but it is aesthetically pleasing,
.
There is something about using a blade to fight that I find just plain sexy

With a Katana you could cut potatoes to your hearts desire..

Though I'm sure that is not the best use of it LOL

My personal favorite has always been the rapier - primarily for it's appearance, but it's also quite useful in many dueling scenarios. I'm also very fond of the thrust in swordsmanship, as it just seems "cleaner" than slicing, hacking, or cutting, yet thrusts can still be quite deadly. Not that all rapiers are purely thrusting swords, but they are very thrust-centric.

I thinks sabers and longswords are pretty cool too though, in their own way. Though, i'm not as big of a fan of them as I am of rapiers

For combat purposes I like the rapier and for actual use, the epee. For the history behind it, katanas. Both the rapier and the katana can be absolutely beautiful, though. So I really cant judge on looks.

The gigantic claymore sword. For intimidation purposes.
